We are still buzzing from the second Danijela Kulezic-Wilson Memorial Postgraduate Symposium! We shared a brilliant day of conversations, research and connection that honoured the legacy of Danijela's work. This symposium would not have been possible without the work of the DKW Scholars and our organising team, our MC Dr Ciara Chambers, our Speakers, Student Help, everyone who attended and the support of Doug Murray. Thank you so much! The Danijela Kulezic-Wilson Memorial Postgraduate Symposium highlights groundbreaking interdisciplinary work from researchers across the country and the world. The one-day event hosted presentations by researchers from around the world, and provided the opportunity to exchange ideas, methodologies, and inspiration, as well as to network with others across and between specialisations. The first part of the day took place in Ó Riada Hall in the UCC Music Department on Sunday's Well, and the afternoon took place in the Kane Screening Room (UCC Film Screen Media, Kane Building on the main campus). by @filmscreenmedia
We were delighted to honour a very special screening of "The Mission" last week, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film! The screening of The Mission (Roland Joffé, 1986) was followed by a discussion of the film with its producer David Puttnam and Hiram Morgan, School of History, chaired by Ciara Chambers, Department of Film & Screen Media. UCC School of History partnered with the Department of Film & Screen Media to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Mission with a special screening. This multiple award winning film, starring Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons, is set in the mid-eighteenth century beside the magnificent Iguacu Falls on the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. Amid the land-grabbing and slave-trading of European powers and planters, Jesuit missionaries attempt to protect the local Amerindians and save the Christian paradise they have been building in the jungle. The film, with a notable Irish input in person of actors Ray McAnally, Aidan Quinn and Liam Neeson, also echoed many of the issues surrounding Liberation Theology when it was made. Pitting Capitalism against Paternalism, Colonialism against Native Rights, Development against Environment, Materialism against Altruism, Violence against Pacifism, the story is a powerful mediation on Idealism and Realism in human development. Producer David Puttnam was present to discuss The Mission which he made alongside director Roland Joffé following on from their successful Killing Fields (1984) about the failed Communist experiment in Cambodia. by @filmscreenmedia
Join us for a special screening of Iranian documentary COUP 53 at 5pm Friday 23 October Boole 1, UCC With Iranian Director Taghi Amirani Hosted by the Department of Sociology and Criminology in collaboration with the Department of Film and Screen Media With Iran and the world pushed to the brink, COUP 53 is less like history, and more like a warning. In 1953, a military coup led by Britain backed by the US overthrew Iran's democratically elected Prime Minister, Mohammad Mossadegh. His crime: nationalising the country's oil. The truth behind that original regime change for oil was buried for decades. Iranian director Taghi Amirani spent ten years uncovering what really happened. Working with legendary editor Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now, The Godfather Part II, The English Patient) and a gripping performance by Ralph Fiennes, the film unfolds like a John le Carré spy thriller — except every word is true. COUP 53 exposes the roots of today's tensions with rare clarity and urgency. Tickets are free and open to all but booking is essential 🎟️ Praise for COUP 53: “A maddening, gripping portrait of how imperialism works Coup 53 is almost as concerned with the film-making process - the lists, the dead ends, the searching - as much as it is with political history "Tara Brady – The Irish Times “This powerful and authoritative documentary by the Iranian filmmaker Taghi Amirani is as gripping as any thriller. A riveting documentary on a very British coup. A grim curtain-raiser to today's tragedies” Peter Bradshaw – The Guardian by @filmscreenmedia
