Feeling nostalgic lately.

I spent part of my childhood summers at the dacha (the Russian word for a countryside) about 50 km from Moscow. Today that distance seems laughably short, but a child’s sense of time moves much more slowly, and back then it felt as if both the journey and the summer itself lasted much longer. In those carefree days without screens or gadgets, I would often lie on my back in the car (those wonderful times when you could actually lie down in a car 😄) and watch the sky and the treetops flashing by.

At the dacha, having a TV felt like a real luxury. We had one, but unless my dad was there — somehow magically able to turn the antenna in exactly the right direction — there was almost nothing to watch. And so I spent most of my time… bored. And it was amazing! It was probably one of the best things that could happen to a child.

It was at the dacha that my imagination truly came alive. And what a wild imagination it was! My sister and I could endlessly invent things to do: exploring the village, the ditches, the forest, the dirt roads, the well, the pond, the river, the neighbor's garden, my father's car, the pile of sand in front of our house. We would secretly ride our bikes to the next village. We spent our mornings picking mushrooms and wild berries. Oh, and the ice cream truck at the center of our village — that was definitely the highlight of the summer! 😃 And then there was the attic, full of stories and family relics.

The dacha was where I drew the most. I drew everything — everything that curious little Filipp loved: the world inside me and the world around me. It was a peaceful, carefree time, when all the people I loved most were there in health and alive.

That is exactly the feeling that drawing gives me now — a sense of calm and inner peace, a sense of safety, and also a sense of freedom. And I think that in today’s world, all these feelings are more important than ever.

A low cortisol afternoon in Madrid. 😃

This is my first quick watercolor sketch, made during a walk through the Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid. It was a very satisfying experience as I still haven’t really done much plein air sketching yet. Now I've got to fill this sketchbook!

Ermita de San Bartolomé, Soria

One of my latest commissions, and it was such a joy to draw this place! Hidden among towering limestone cliffs, the Hermitage of San Bartolomé feels suspended between history and legend. Its warm golden stone, dramatic setting, and peaceful atmosphere make it a place that invites you to slow down, observe, and appreciate the beauty of both architecture and nature.

Casa Batlló, Barcelona

This special year for Modernism, marked by the completion of the central tower of the Sagrada Familia, @virtual_sketchers gave us the opportunity to draw another masterpiece of Antoni Gaudí — Casa Batlló.

Drawing this house, with its countless details, vibrant colors, flowing lines, and asymmetrical elements, was a real challenge for my inner perfectionist, but it was absolutely worth it!

I've been to Barcelona several times and even lived there for a couple of months, yet I never really fell in love with the city. But I can honestly say that sketching has changed the way I see places, so Barcelona definitely has a chance to win me over now!

Iglesia de Santa Ana, Málaga

Definitely one of Málaga's hidden gems, in my humble opinion. It's a particularly fascinating object for sketching because of the strong perspective: the vertical lines of the surrounding buildings naturally draw the eye toward the church façade, while the warm red tones of the church create a striking contrast with the blue sky and the ochre-colored buildings around it. I really enjoyed drawing it!

Louvet Delarose flower shop, Cancale, France

This week's challenge from @virtual_sketchers took us to the storefront of the French flower shop @louvetdelarose 🌹🌸🌺. It was a real pleasure for me to draw all the tiny details packed into this photo, and it also turned out to be great practice. Málaga is full of beautiful vintage cafés and charming little shops as well, and I'll be sharing sketches of many of them with you very soon! 😉

Alameda Principal, 18, Málaga

Continuing my series of façades from Málaga's main avenue.

The dome of these regional government's headquarters is almost completely hidden by the ficus trees lining the avenue and can only be seen if you walk right to the edge of the sidewalk. If I hadn't started sketching, I'd probably never have noticed it, even though it's such an important detail and, in a way, the building's defining feature!
