Two nights at the glorious Hatoya Hotel. An icon of Japan’s showa era, virtually unchanged since the 70s.
.
Red carpets, golden mirrored walls and a chandelier lit lobby, set the mood on arrival. Although the place was eerily empty when I checked in on Friday night (one can only book on weekends)
.
The architectural highlight is its iconic spaceship like bridge with cat’s eye windows that connect the blocks. The fluorescent lit arcade, compete with retro games was also really cool.
.
My room overlooked the scenic hills of Ito and the ocean beyond, whilst others face inwards towards the iconic red neon signage ha-to-ya (which was only partially functioning)
.
I really hope this place can continue to operate, as there are not many like it. If you’re on the Izu peninsula, definitely drop by if you have the chance!

This month marks one year of shooting with the Hasselblad X system. It’s a camera that made me fall in love with the shooting process again, simply because it’s such a beautifully designed product - and of course the stunning medium format sensor & lenses. It’s been around the world with me in that time and here are a few of my favourite shots!

Seibu Shibuya closes its doors for the last time today, following 58 years in business. The brutalist structure is set to be redeveloped, following much urban renewal in the Shibuya district.

Hovering over a residential enclave in Anpachi, lies one of the world’s largest solar buildings - The Solar Ark - a thousand foot structure clad in 5000 PV panels.
.
The building was built by Sanyo Electric Co. and was in operation between 2001 - 2022 generating 530000 KWh annually. The Ark is about to be demolished, as the site was sold and a logistics centre currently being built on the site.
.
The residential enclave built right next to it is quite surreal, as it’s built so close that the structure appears to hover over the dwellings.

CAPRI PENANG - Reinterpreting the familiar

Drawing from the arches, colonnades and repetitive rhythms of George Town’s Peranakan shophouses and five-foot ways, familiar forms are abstracted and reinterpreted at the scale of the hotel.

Not a replication of heritage, but a contemporary expression shaped by it.

CAPRI PENANG - Rooted in place

Capri Penang (@capribyfraserpenang) begins with the architectural character of George Town: Its layered streetscape, shifting scales and rich coexistence of old and new.

The hotel is conceived not as an isolated object, but as part of this evolving urban fabric.

Inazawa Grand Bowl - the world’s largest bowling alley with 116 lanes. Built in 1972, its interior retains many retro fittings and is monumental in scale..! (A 650ft floor with no columns)
.
Japan went through a bowling boom in the 60s and 70s leading to over 120,000 bowling lanes being built, although many have since closed. This complex actually used to be twice as big, with another 116 lanes on the ground floor which have since been changed into a supermarket.
.
When I visited on a weekday evening the whole place was quiet with only a few lanes occupied by elderly folk, who were all pros. The thousands of empty orange plastic chairs were quite a sight, as was the cool red neon sign out front.
.
Worth the trip out from Nagoya, although it’s a fair walk from the nearest station.

Site of Reversible Destiny.
An experimental landscape project by artists / architects Arakawa and Gins.
.
The site features concrete follies, skewed pavilions, mazes, and sloping pathways meant to “disrupt physical balance and deeply challenge bodily perception”
