get to know me in fives 🌟 it’s impossible to pick five favourite books & albums in particular, but I did my best to narrow it down. also feel weird posting a picture of myself on this account but anyways! by @finalgirlapologist

personally I read horror all year, but halloween is a week away so it would be wrong not to highlight my love of the genre. I love horror and the multitude of themes that can be explored within it, how it enables conversations about complex topics and aspects of the human experience.

Many of these books overlap with multiple themes! It is hard to put them into just one box. by @finalgirlapologist

2026 has been a great year of live music for me personally. I saw some of my favourite artists, old and new, some for the first time and others for the second or third (I saw Ethel Cain four times in one week, yes that was the peak moment in my existence).

I do love assigning books and music together if you haven’t already noticed, so here are some book recs based on the highlight acts I’ve seen this year so far!

I have a love hate relationship with short story collections and an even strong love hate relationship with writing in the form. They remind me of high school and writing comparative essays about The Yellow Wallpaper and Tim Winton.

Since I am trying to get better at writing short stories, I’ve been making the effort to read more.

There are some fantastic short story collections out there, most of my favourites including interconnected that weave together a larger narrative.

Do you have a favourite short story or short story collection? by @finalgirlapologist

what I read in september! I read seven books, bringing me to sixty-one for the year and officially surpassing my goal! I read a lot of new releases this past month, all of which I loved.

have you read any of these? are you planning to? by @finalgirlapologist

i’m on track to exceeding my reading goal of sixty books for the year as I just finished my 58th. maybe it’s optimist to think i can read another 26, but never say never. here are the ones i am hopeful to get to before the year ends. some are newly added to my tbr, others have been sitting on my shelf for who knows how long.

i plan to read ‘our cut of salt’ next. what other ones on this list should i get to as soon as possible? by @finalgirlapologist

book recs i would give you based on your favourite illustrated icon! these recs are purely based on vibes and not much more 🐛 by @finalgirlapologist

I read seven books last month! some were new releases, others had been sitting on my shelves for a couple years. I read four books for women in translation month, my favourite being ‘Boulder’ by Eva Baltasar. I have the other two books in the triptych on loan from the library.

did you read anything for women in translation month? have you read or are hoping to pick up any of these books?

I read We Hexed the Moon and Girl’s Girl in july which happened to be perfect. they are both stories that centre on young women grappling with friendships and the future. it’s a shame these books are so hard to come by in australia because they truly are great. I know the algorithm does not care for reviews but oh well! by @finalgirlapologist

there are still so many exciting book releases to come in the last few months of 2026, so here are the ones i’m looking forward to most. i cannot wait to get my hands on these!

what books are you most excited for that are still yet to be released? have you been lucky enough to read any of these? by @finalgirlapologist

quite genuinely have only been listening to lost weekend since its release. couldn’t help but put together a list of book recs based on some of the songs on the album. current favourite track is the governor’s waltz!

if you’ve listened to the album what are your current favourite songs off it? by @finalgirlapologist

writing opening lines will forever be the bane of my existence. there are certain opening passages that are seared into my brain, that i wish i wrote or i wish i could emulate in my own writing. here are some of those.

sunburn, Chloe Michelle Howarth

our wives under the sea, Julia Armfield

martyr!, Kaveh Akbar

feast while you can, Mikaella Clements and Onjuli Datta

Anyone’s Ghost, August Thompson by @finalgirlapologist
