Better in Person, EP 020 @fatherakki

Better in person or better online? Father Akki says in person, a zillion percent. You can see his smile and hear his voice, and he says that is what his mama raised, a creative force with a passion to say hello.

We asked if this is what we can find him doing offline. He says it’s his thing. Online is him posting the art, and offline, 24/7, is him making it so it can go online.

He’s from California and has been painting on clothes for about eight years. He paints on everything, but he says clothing is the catalyst that took him anywhere and everywhere. He closed us out with shout outs to his brother Luis, to Kaiser, rest in peace, to the high school teachers who put money in his pocket the first time he sold a piece, and to his mom, always.

We caught up with Rafa and Genesis of @tallerderafa at ComplexCon. The brother and sister duo from the Bronx built the brand on what their pops passed down, and they’ve kept it in the family ever since.

Their first Nike collab puts a Bronx spin on the Air Max Goadome Low. It comes straight out of the garage culture they grew up around, a tribute to the people who keep the city running with their hands. Distressed brown leather, eyelets shaped like bolt heads and a wrench hangtag make the shoe feel like it came off the shop floor.

It has been one of our favorite collabs of the year, from the campaign visuals to the family roots behind it.

Nike signed Michael Jordan in 1984 before he had played a single NBA game and gave him a cut of every shoe with his name on it.

Forty-two years later, the Jumpman is on skaters, NFL receivers, baseball diamonds and a football club in Paris.

Eight chapters on how Michael Jordan became Jordan Brand.

Reader Series Issue 022. Swipe →

1984. Nike signs Michael Jordan before his first NBA game and gives him a share of his own line.

Peter Moore designs the Air Jordan 1 and the Wings logo. Nike set a $3 million sales target. The shoe did $126 million in its first year.

The famous “Banned” Air Jordan story started with a different shoe.

In October 1984, the NBA wrote to Nike about Jordan’s red and black Nike Air Ships. The Air Jordan 1 had not even released yet.

Nike turned the controversy into a campaign anyway, and the myth became part of the shoe.

Jordan almost left Nike before the Jumpman became the Jumpman.

In 1987, Peter Moore and Rob Strasser left Nike and tried to bring Jordan with them. Nike handed the next shoe to Tinker Hatfield.

The Air Jordan 3 arrived in 1988 with a new logo on the tongue: the Jumpman. Jordan stayed.

In 1997, Jordan stopped being just a signature shoe and became its own brand.

Nike introduced Jordan Brand in New York with Ray Allen as its first athlete, followed by Vin Baker, Michael Finley, Eddie Jones and Derek Anderson.

Michael Jordan was still playing for the Bulls when his logo became a company.

The Jumpman did not stay on the basketball court for long.

Derek Jeter wore Jordan with the Yankees. Randy Moss became the brand’s first NFL athlete. CC Sabathia took it to the mound. Denny Hamlin brought it into NASCAR.

A basketball logo was becoming a sports brand.

Skaters were wearing Jordans long before Nike SB officially touched them.

In 1987, Lance Mountain skated mismatched Air Jordan 1s in The Search for Animal Chin, using different pairs to make the shoes last longer.

Twenty-seven years later, Nike SB gave him his own Air Jordan 1 designed to wear through as it was skated.

Virgil Abloh helped push Jordan deeper into fashion, then the Jumpman crossed into European football.

We joined @Nike at Highland Park Bowl for the Nike Sportswear Next Strike Wins event, celebrating the release of the new Air Max sneaker.

The highlight was the customization station, where you could build your own hoodie, shirt or sneakers and have the finished pieces delivered to you anywhere in the venue. The NSW collection was on display, the bites were made fresh in house, the drinks were complimentary, and yes, we got our bowling on.

Better in Person, EP 019 @andreo.otiniano

Andreo believes you have to be so smart to be so stupid. He says he’s better in person, but he’s chronically online, and we’re all guilty of it.

Offline, you can find him playing volleyball and taking photos. He’s a photographer and a big volleyball player, even though he’s 5’10. We asked if he’s a setter or if he goes full LeBron and spikes.
