Choosing my favorite Deep Purple records after Ritchie Blackmore left is no easy task. But I am certain history will look back at this chapter with a whole new level of appreciation.

Yes, the iconic Mark II riffs were gone — but in exchange, we got a fresh, open musicality. Especially when mastermind Bob Ezrin came on board, he unlocked a brilliant late-career renaissance, pulling the absolute best out of every single member.

From Purpendicular all the way to SPLAT, this lineup has created pure magic.

Is Ian Gillan really mentioning Mick Jones from Foreigner here?! 🎸🎤

Sometimes the brain (and AI) hears exactly what it wants to hear! 😅

While listening to Deep Purple’s "Body Line" (*Now What?!*, 2013), I noticed that Ian Gillan seemed to be singing "...Mike Jones driving..." quite clearly. A quick check of the lyrics on Google and Spotify seemed to confirm it—there it was in black and white! 🤯

The reality? A classic case of AI hallucination! 🤖❌

Google and streaming services rely on automated transcription databases. When Gillan belts out the rapid-fire line "...gossamer gown, no wonder my jaw is dropping..." into the mic, the speech AI simply turns it into:

"...fight for your country... no one but Mike Jones driving".

It’s a brilliant misheard lyric (or "mondegreen") that took on a life of its own as a persistent online myth thanks to automated lyrics. So, Mick Jones from Foreigner gets to keep his driver's license—he isn't actually behind the wheel in this song! 😉

The Beatles – The Beatles (White Album) ⚪️🎸

After pushing the boundaries of studio technology to the limit with the production of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the follow-up album was surprisingly acoustic, intimate, and quiet in many parts.

The "White Album"—along with the Let It Be... Naked version—is definitely one of my absolute favorites in the Fab Four's entire discography!

According to Discogs, I have a totally unexpected treasure in my collection—at least in terms of monetary value 💰, which really wasn't on my radar:

Talk Talk – The Colour Of Spring

This album had been flying under the radar in my collection until now and didn't get much attention. But curiosity got the better of me, and I decided to put it back on the turntable a little while ago.

Well, what can I say?! ‼️

A damn brilliant album!

Whether it truly justifies the premium price on Discogs is debatable—but it is a piece of music history that is absolutely worth hearing. If only for the extraordinarily good production, which leaves nothing to be desired sonically. 🔥🎶

ROBERT PLANT - BAND OF JOY

It arrived today, and I put it on right away.

What a brilliant album‼️ I wasn't expecting this at all. I have to listen to it again immediately🦻. Band of Joy (2010) is absolutely magnificent and often underrated within Robert Plant’s solo body of work.

After the massive success of Raising Sand with Alison Krauss, Plant didn't simply ride the wave of a safe bet; instead, he teamed up with Buddy Miller, Patty Griffin, and Darrell Scott to recapture the essence of deep American roots music, folk, Americana, and psychedelic gospel. What makes the album so brilliant:

*Sound & Production: Buddy Miller—handling both guitar and production—creates an incredibly rich, warm, and earthy analog sound. The instrumentation feels wonderfully airy and dynamic.

*Perfect Vocal Harmonies: The duets and vocal harmonies with Patty Griffin (especially on "Angel Dance" or "House of Cards") lend immense emotional depth to the songs.

*Song Selection: From covers of the slowcore band Low ("Monkey" and "Silver Rider") to traditional folk numbers like "Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down," Plant transforms every track into a mystery all its own.

Motörhead

Motörhead actually marked my first real encounter with the hard rock sound ⚡️ It hit me full force during a phase when I was transitioning from 70s disco to 80s pop, listening mostly to ABBA and ELO 🎶
It must have been a Wednesday evening, sometime between 8:05 and 9:00 PM 📻 Mal Sandock’s hit parade was playing on WDR 2 when, suddenly, the song "Please Don’t Touch" was introduced. Performed by "Girlhead"—or was it "Motörschool"? 😜 Of course, it was Headgirl—that brilliant collaboration between Motörhead and Girlschool! I already knew the track as a mellower 60s classic by Johnny Kidd & The Pirates—but this extreme, gritty version absolutely blew me away 💥 Bam—fan for life! 🤘 Sure, they played songs by REO Speedwagon, Rainbow, Foreigner, and Styx, too. But those were just watered-down rock bands; that synth-heavy sound simply couldn't compare to Motörhead.

As luck would have it, a short time later I won the legendary live album *No Sleep ’til Hammersmith* at a fair 🎟️🏆 That sealed the deal for me! Alongside AC/DC’s *Back In Black* and KISS’s *Unmasked*, it became my third hard rock album ever 🎸—sitting right there among all the disco compilations and lightweight pop records.
Sometimes, all it takes is that one song on the radio at just the right moment! 🔊🔥

Robert Plant - *lullaby and… The Ceaseless Roar*

(2014) is rightly considered one of the strongest and most mature albums of Robert Plant’s post-Led Zeppelin era.

It fascinatingly blends British folk, African trance rhythms, North African desert sounds, blues, and modern electronic/trip-hop elements.

Musically, Plant once again broke new ground here, as mere nostalgia never appealed to him. Instead of simply retracing old Led Zeppelin paths, he sought a way to channel the power of past moments—combined with new world-music influences—into a fresh, modern sound.

In my opinion, he pulled off this feat brilliantly, not only with *lullaby and… The Ceaseless Roar* but also with his subsequent works. A masterpiece for any record collection! 🎶✨

In 1971, Meddle was released, an album that changed everything. It moved away from short psychedelic experiments and towards vast, atmospheric soundscapes.

Side 2 alone – Echoes, at 23 minutes – is not just music, but a journey. The legendary "ping" at the beginning was created by a piano running through a Leslie speaker. A single note that opens up an entire universe. Add to that the hypnotic bass of One of These Days and the gentle melancholy of A Pillow of Winds.

Meddle was the blueprint for The Dark Side of the Moon. A masterpiece that perfectly combines tranquility and primal force.

Put the needle on, close your eyes, and dive in. 🎶🎧

When a debut album features a masterpiece like "Then Came The Last Day Of May," you immediately know what this band is capable of. Even back in 1972, this song showcased the sheer class of Blue Öyster Cult: dark, literary lyrics, perfect dramatic pacing, and Buck Dharma’s brilliant, fluid guitar work. 🎸🔥

In Germany and across Europe, BÖC were unfortunately often underrated or wrongly pigeonholed as just the band behind "(Don't Fear) The Reaper." That does absolutely no justice to the band's versatility! While they were hailed in the US as the answer to Black Sabbath or Deep Purple—filling massive arenas—over here, they remained something of an insider's tip for connoisseurs.

For me, they definitely belong in the absolute top tier of rock history! ⚡️

What’s your take on Blue Öyster Cult? Do you also consider them one of the underrated giants of the 70s?
