Not too long ago, I got to share a part of my life story with my friends at @fjallravenofficial. I am deeply thankful for each and every friendship that came from the making of this account of my work as an explorer. The support of the people around you is as important as anything when you pursue your dreams. Some memories of an incredible week with new friends and family 🖤🐾

There is magic of the beginning here. Like a shy sliver of sun in the sky. We are hearing the first language of things. One of the great hungers of the human spirit from the earliest to the most contemporary level is the hunger for curiosity. I think it is part of an older type of consciousness. A consciousness that still dream, that hopes for a better future.

Thank you @tedxstellenbosch and @stellenboschuni for having me! It was a special homecoming to the @ted stage. I stood here 12 years ago for the first time as an uncertain young explorer with one or two ideas around how wilderness and exploration can save us from the extinction of curiosity. I had an opportunity to re-remember my story as an explorer, and the reason why I committed myself to the work I do. I also had time to reflect on the people I met along the way.

Looking back, I deeply appreciate the people that have supported my story from the start. Poeple like @deleciadavids @brandoncomotion @pieterkloppers. I have learned the hard way who the people are that allow dreams to grow, and who the people are that steal it from you, and the importance of moral fibre and integrity when no one is looking.

I hope to do a lot more work with young explorers in the future, especially in the field of exploration. We’ll show the world how indigenous wisdom can help us solve modern problems with ancient solutions. But most importantly, I’m going to surround myself with life-giving friends and communities!

Tracking taught me that the story is always already there - you just have to slow down enough to see it. Most people move through a landscape. Very few actually read it.

This November, @gregorsnaps and I are opening up that skill to eight people at a time. Six days in a private concession in the Okavango Delta, where ancient tracking practice meets the craft of visual storytelling - not as two separate disciplines, but as one way of paying attention.

Yes, you’ll leave with better images, but what you’ll actually take home is a different relationship with noticing - one that doesn’t switch off when you get back to your inbox.
