DOCUMENTARY FEATURE FOR 2024 OSCAR CONSIDERATION - FINDING HER BEAT

Are you a Member of the Documentary Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS)? FINDING HER BEAT is now streaming under the Documentary Feature Film category on the Academy Screening Room.

Watch the film that critics have called "irresistible", "exhilarating", "a certified hit", "visually stunning" and "One of the year's most engaging and captivating documentaries"!

In the spirit of our film, that celebrates powerful artists on the margins with BIG DRUMS and BIG DREAMS, our big dream is that our film will find its way in front of the Documentary Branch to consider without a six figure Oscar campaign budget. This film's production team reflect it's mission and cast with the majority identifying as female/nonbinay, Asian, and/or LGBTQ+.

We have screened at over 50 festivals globally, won almost a dozen awards, earned a 100% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, been nominated for 2 Film Threat Awards, and screened theatrically across North America.

Logline:
A master of Japanese drumming and a Korean adoptee from Minnesota boldly convene an all-female troupe to perform Taiko, the Japanese drumming art that has been off-limits to women for centuries. Buoyed by dynamic drum performances and do-or-die spirit, FINDING HER BEAT is an energizing and uplifting story of music, cultural expression and sisterhood.

From the team behind Sound Unseen 2022's Centerpiece film @findingherbeat, director Keri Pickett & Producer/Editor Dawn Mikkelson, have a new documentary in the works, UNCLE ROY.

We want to see this film, and we're asking our friends and supporters to consider donating to this vital project.

Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pickettpictures/uncle-roy

UNCLE ROY is a poignant exploration of family, memory, and artistic legacy. Filmmaker Keri Pickett delves into the life of her 93-year-old uncle, Roy Blakey, a trailblazer in theatrical ice skating and gay male photography. Their deep bond, as the last members of their family tree, is revealed through decades of recent and archival footage.

Roy’s story spans from the Depression-era to the present, beginning with his career in 1950s and 60s ice shows, finding an authentic gay life in the world of touring performances. He became a celebrated photographer in 1970s New York, as a second career, capturing stars like Debbie Allen, Shirley MacLaine, and Divine. He pioneered contemporary male nude photography with his groundbreaking book, HE (1972). Inspired by Roy, Keri followed in his footsteps, becoming a photographer and strengthening their lifelong connection.

The film showcases Roy’s extensive ice-skating memorabilia collection—over 44,000 items, spanning a century of dancing on ice. When Roy suffers a life-threatening seizure and the onset of dementia, Keri becomes his primary caregiver. As his memories fade, she races to fulfill his final wish: securing a home for his unparalleled and far-reaching archives.

On Roy’s 94th birthday, only a month before his passing, the Tretter Collection at the University of Minnesota agreed to preserve both his photography and skating memorabilia, ensuring his contributions are preserved along with all their queer significance. In capturing Roy’s final chapter, Keri’s journey highlights the power of art, love, and legacy, preserving the story of a vibrant artist whose impact will endure.
