It’s actually not possible to elongate the neck. An illusion of a much more painful truth, the brass coils are instead collapsing the collar bones and compressing the ribs, shortening their torsos. It’s excruciating, and for those still practicing, they receive their first winding at a very young age.

This tribe, along with others, was forced to flee their home country of Burma in the 1960s, when the military took control and outlawed primitive tribal traditions such as these.

The origin or this tradition is still debated, even amongst the members of the tribe. Some say the coils are to make the women look more beautiful. Some the opposite, and that making them less attractive protects them from being taken. Others say that the coils protect them from tigers, who kill by attacking the neck.
