How do you capture an entire life in words? I don’t know, and I’m not ready to try. Speaking of her in the past tense feels wrong and too soon. At just 22 pounds and 17 or 18 years of life, Tobey Fine-Hobson left us and this world on Friday. Her tired body was ready to rest, even if we weren’t.

Last year Tobey fully entered the wind down of life. As much as I prepared myself for this day, I wasn’t ready when it happened.

Tobey taught me more about humanity than anyone else ever could, and she showed me what pure love truly looks and feels like. She was my constant shadow and home office co-worker, always close by, making sure I was okay. I was her best friend, and she never let me forget it. The truth is, she was mine too, and I spent every day making sure she was okay as well.

As a senior dog, we were privileged to be the ones to take care of Tobey these past few years. She needed us more than before, and it’s the hard transition, inevitably, that you go through life when roles reverse.

Family comes in every shape and size and yes, even a white and light brown speckled Havanese named Tobey. As a six or seven year old rescue, we were lucky to have her in our lives for the past 11 years. From her sweet face to falling asleep in your lap, she knew how to fully love and accept love. She got me ready for Jason.

At the end, I held her paw just as I had so many times in life. It was peaceful and she drifted off for one last long sleep. She was such a sweet girl and loved, and is forever missed.

When I was about 5, I experienced my first loss of a family dog—our Hobo. My dad wrote a letter to the editor in the local paper, saying in part, “Hobo didn’t have a pedigree, he was a mixture, but to us, he was a thoroughbred — the greatest dog that ever lived and we will always treasure his devotion.”

We feel the same about Tobey. Rest sweet girl. Tobey, 2007 or ‘08-2025.

About last night (swipe ⬅️)…a very good one at the Natural History Museum with our friends at Artists at Work and L.A. County Arts and Culture.

We celebrated the four Los Angeles artists and community organizations participating in this inspiring effort—including the L.A. Conservancy’s talented artist, Alma Cielo, and her 1,000 Voices Altadena Mosaic project.

Anniversaries are never neutral. In what would have been her 59th year today, Julia Claudine Fine stopped at 56…We should speak the names of those we’ve lost, tell their stories, and honor their lives…We all leave something behind. Julia did. She loved her family. Today, I’m wishing her a happy birthday and thinking about her place in this vast space—and the questions loss and grief leave behind: Who will remember? What are we meant to do while we’re here?…Happy birthday, Julia. You are remembered, always.
