What two brilliant, completely individual Champagnes.
Ulysse Collin Les Pierrières Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut, base 2016, dég. 03/2021. For me, this is Champagne at its absolute best. Incredibly deep, complex and hedonistic, never overwhelming, with remarkable elegance, vinous texture and ultra-fine mousse. Smoky, chalky tension leads into a long, saline finish with real grip. A few years of post-disgorgement aging have done this bottle a lot of good, bringing even more depth, calm and presence. Wonderful to drink now.
Les Pierrières is a tiny 1.2-hectare monopole in Vert-Toulon, planted on shallow soils over chalk and rare black silex. It was also the vineyard from which Olivier Collin made his first Champagne in 2004.

Emmanuel Brochet Le Mont Benoit Premier Cru Extra Brut, base 2020, dég. 02/2023. Broader and more earthy in expression, deeply vinous, textured and full of character. Fine mousse, ripe structure, subtle oxidative notes and a savoury, saline finish.
The 2020 base contains 20% reserve wine and spent 11 months in barrel before bottling unfined and unfiltered. Only 12,825 bottles were produced.
Many thanks for sharing this lovely Brochet with me, Dominik!

1989 von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Auslese Nr. 96. Classic Grünhaus with its unmistakable cassis and elderflower notes. The acidity is wonderfully animating, carrying brilliant sweetness that feels completely integrated. There is so much energy and precision here, even after nearly four decades. The finish is exceptionally long, weightless and precise. This is exactly the kind of Auslese I would take over any richer, more opulent sweet wine. Benchmark sweet Riesling, absolute world class and, for me, very close to perfection. Unforgettable. No. 96 refers to the individual Fuder. At Grünhaus, particularly distinctive casks were traditionally bottled separately under their own barrel number.
Thank you, @notrollingerplease , for so many wonderful Grünhaus moments. I really appreciate that.

Lorenzo Accomasso Barolo Riserva Rocche 2007. Gloriously dirty, uncompromising old-school Barolo. Earthy, a little wild, with plenty of grip and rough edges. Nothing polished or softened. Firm tannins that almost demand food, followed by a powerful, long finish. This is a wine you have to engage with, and that’s exactly what I love about it.
Interestingly, Accomasso himself wasn’t particularly convinced by the 2007 at first. Years later, he said he liked it more and more as it developed in bottle.

We also tasted Arnaud Ente Bourgogne Blanc 2019 and Georg Breuer Berg Schlossberg 2021 (swipe to see more), but I didn’t take proper notes on either. The Ente was a decent Bourgogne Blanc, although this particular bottle didn’t come close to the hype surrounding the domaine. The Schlossberg was completely shut down and simply far too young. Opening it now makes very little sense to me. Give it another ten years. by @finest_wines

2012 Markus Molitor Graacher Himmelreich *** Pinot Noir is now entering a beautiful stage of maturity. Elegant and light on its feet, with silky tannins, juicy acidity and excellent tension. The oak is now completely absorbed, adding grip and contour without showing any obvious wood character. Plenty of depth and finesse, leading into a very long, slightly saline finish. Perfect to drink now, but there is absolutely no rush.
Molitor has just 0.3 ha of Pinot Noir in Graacher Himmelreich, planted in 1987. A brilliant reminder that German Pinot Noir doesn’t need to hide behind Burgundy. It was a joy to drink alongside the excellent menu at Dorfhus Gupf.

The 2004 Remírez de Ganuza Reserva is in a beautiful place right now. Deep, polished and remarkably complete, with fine tannins, plenty of freshness and a long, savoury finish. Fully mature, yet with enough energy and structure to suggest there’s no hurry at all. One of the fascinating details at Remírez de Ganuza is their unusual selection of Tempranillo bunches: the shoulders, considered the part with the best phenolic ripeness, are separated from the tips and reserved for wines such as the Reserva.
A wonderful bottle and a perfect companion to our excellent lunch at Gaststuben zum Schlössli in St. Gallen. Always a pleasure to be there (swipe to see more).

Heitz Trailside Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 is just entering its drinking window. Still youthful at the core, but already opening beautifully, with great aromatic depth, plenty of presence on the palate, fine tannins and a long, precise finish. A great bottle today, with a long future ahead.
Heitz acquired Trailside in 1984 and had the vineyard certified organic by CCOF as early as 1987, decades before organic farming became a major topic in Napa. The first vineyard designated Trailside Cabernet followed with the 1989 vintage.

The 2019 Laurent Ponsot Meursault Charmes Cuvée de la Centaurée has plenty of depth and texture, but never feels heavy. Dense and finely textured through the mid palate, with a very fine reduction that is beautifully integrated. Good freshness and a subtle mineral grip lead into a long, slightly saline finish. Already excellent, with more still to come.
Ponsot uses the Ardea Seal (see pic 2), whose wine contact shield is made from a technical polymer also used in artificial hearts. I’m a big supporter of closures like this. Sealing wine with tree bark in the 21st century feels outdated to me, especially given the bottle variation and cork taint natural cork can cause.

Ca’ del Bosco Annamaria Clementi Rosé 2015 shows lovely depth and plenty of nuance, with a beautifully integrated mousse. Disgorged in summer 2023 after around eight years on the lees. The richness feels much more like ripe Pinot Noir than something driven by dosage. A touch too broad for me on its own, but with the excellent first course at @wirtschaftzuraltenpost in St. Gallen it worked beautifully. Definitely more of a food wine than a solo act for my taste, and already drinking very well.

2000 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle from magnum. One of the highlights of the night and a big surprise, as I have never had this wine anywhere near this brilliant before. Beautiful Syrah, fully mature and right at its peak.
1996 Château Gruaud Larose. Classic Bordeaux at its best, mature, balanced and drinking beautifully right now.
2002 Ernst Triebaumer Blaufränkisch Mariental. One of the most complete Austrian Blaufränkisch. Still remarkably fresh, straight and focused, with plenty of life ahead.
Dom Pérignon 2003. P1 is rarely my thing, often a little too rich and sweet for my taste, and this was no exception. With the right food though, it can work extremely well.
A great evening with cool people, fine food and some outstanding wines. We enjoyed quite a few more bottles, but sometimes the company matters more than tasting notes. taken in Gaststuben zum Schlössli by @finest_wines

The 2022 Roumier Clos de la Bussière is right in a wonderfully hedonistic fruit phase. A gorgeous Pinot Noir and exactly my kind of style. Around 60% whole bunches bring plenty of structure, grip and that slightly herbal, spicy stem character that makes the wine so distinctive. At the same time, the fruit is incredibly seductive and open, framed by super fine tannins and a long, persistent finish. Like many 2022s, already dangerously easy to drink, but with more than enough structure underneath for a long future. I wouldn’t be surprised if this shuts down again at some point.
Clos de la Bussière is Roumier’s 2.59 hectare monopole, with its origins going back to Cistercian monks in the 12th century. Georges Roumier acquired the entire clos in 1953.
Many thanks to @max___muster for sharing this wonderful bottle with us.

The 1992 Heitz Cellar Trailside Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a superb old school Napa Cabernet. Remarkably fresh, with no sense of overripeness or fatigue. Beautifully developed, but still driven by structure, energy and fine tannins. If anything, this feels like the beginning of its ideal drinking window rather than the end. A great bottle.
1992 was only the fourth vintage of Trailside Cabernet. Heitz acquired the Rutherford vineyard in 1984, and it was already certified organic by 1987, remarkably early for Napa.

A crazy deep orange-amber colour, yet the wine is far from oxidised. The 1994 Zind Humbrecht Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Riesling is clearly highly mature, but still drinking with great pleasure. Dense, broad and quite opulent, with impressive weight and a long, persistent finish. Ex domaine in 2023.
