🖌️Today is the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.

🔍Speaking last week, Ambassador Anna Merrifield stressed that the global situation for media freedom and the safety of journalists is exceptionally grim. Journalists and media workers continue to face threats, attacks and violence, both online and offline, while most crimes against them go unpunished.

⚠️Women journalists are disproportionately targeted. They must be able to carry out their work safely, both online and offline.

🌍Finland is currently co-chairing the Media Freedom Coalition. Through the Coalition, we are working with partners to promote media freedom, improve journalists’ safety and strengthen accountability for attacks against them.

✊Journalism is not a crime. Every attack against a journalist must be investigated, and those responsible must be held accountable. by @finlandintanzania

💭How to drive economic growth and job creation in Southern Tanzania?

Ambassador Anna Merrifield and the Embassy team met with representatives of the Tanzania National Chamber of Commerce, (TNCC) in Mtwara.

Discussions focused on the economic development of the region, private sector growth, entrepreneurship, investment opportunities and the business environment in Southern Tanzania.

🚢We also had the pleasure of visiting the Port of Mtwara.

The importance of this international port for regional trade and economic development is growing.

💭The discussions focused on port operations, transport and logistics, regional connectivity, and opportunities for enhancing commercial cooperation.

We appreciate the opportunity to learn more about the region’s business environment and future potential!

Advancing human rights and democratic governance requires strong, enduring partnerships.

We were deeply honored to welcome the newly appointed Ambassador of Finland to Tanzania, H.E. Anna Merrifield, to the Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) headquarters.

Her Excellency visited our offices to learn more about LHRC’s core work and to receive an update on the ongoing partnership between the Embassy of Finland and LHRC around human rights and democracy.

Finland has long been a core development partner for LHRC. Currently, they are supporting us on a vital project running from 2025 to 2027, titled “Strengthening Human Rights and Democratic Accountability in Tanzania,” which focuses heavily on strategic interventions across 10 regions of Mainland Tanzania.

During this courtesy visit, our team, led by Executive Director Dr. Anna Henga, had insightful discussions with Her Excellency regarding our project milestones, ongoing field outcomes, and future areas of strategic cooperation.

We extend our warmest Karibu Tanzania to Ambassador Merrifield! We look forward to working closely under her leadership to build a more just, equitable, and democratically accountable society for all.
