First week in the High Sierras have been incredible. After 700 miles of desert, it was quite a shock to the system.

Every day I spend in the Sierra Nevada mountains reinforce my belief that they are the most beautiful place on earth.

Hiking through snowfields, over passes, through snowstorms and thunderstorms, crossing fast moving creeks on sketchy logs or walking knee deep through freezing water in sub freezing temps at 3am. This past week has been filled with so many firsts for me.

During this stretch of trail I re-listened to The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho while I hiked. The story is about Santiago, a young shepard who sold his flock to pursue his dream of finding buried treasure near the Egyptian pyramids. It began to thunderstorm as I trudged on, and as storm turned to snow, Santiago was moving through the desert. He realized that the desert was going to test his caravan at every turn to see if it was in time. And to quote the book, “and if it is, we will make it to the oasis.”

Sometimes while I am out here I feel a bit like Santiago. Just a boy chasing his dream. But my convoy is moving in time, and I have faith we will make it to the oasis taken in Sierra Nevada Mountains by @finndaugh

A few pictures I took on my camera during the desert section of the Pacific Crest Trail. (miles 0-702)

After having now hiked 1200 miles of desert (≈500 of AZT + ≈700 of the PCT) I can safely say that I LOVE desert hiking. Something about thriving in a landscape so harsh, but also so full of life. It’s special. Catch me on the Grand Enchantment Trail soon!!!

Some highlights from the desert include:
*Getting vortexed at Farmer John’s
*Picking up every Horny Toad I saw
*Night hiking the Aqueduct after spending the day with @senseiproblems
*Meeting a guy in Warner Springs who was carrying a laptop on trail
*Hot Springs! taken in Southern California by @finndaugh

About a month ago I started the Pacific Crest Trail!
700 miles in, it’s been incredible so far.

After blogging on the Arizona Trail last year, I’ve decided to make an effort to stay in the moment on this trail. That means not posting much for now, but I have still been taking some amazing pictures, and hiking through beautiful places.

Enjoy this picture of me stoked to make it to the Sierras, and stay posted for stories and pictures of me up high (13k ft high!!) in the coming days. taken in Kennedy Meadows, California by @finndaugh

A few days ago I got the opportunity to do some east coast backpacking. Dillon, Aidan, and I hiked the Foothills Trail! After spending the past year backpacking on the west coast, and recently hiking the Arizona Trail, it was a shock to the system.

There’s so much life out here, and I was constantly in awe at the plants, animals, and water (every 1/4 mile it seemed). It was awesome to not need to carry more than 1L at a time, and because of the length of the trail (76miles) I decided to carry some climbing shoes and a chalk bag in hopes of some trail side boulders. I ended up climbing 3 pretty fun boulder problems that I spotted on the trail, and to me, it made carrying the shoes worth it. Thru Climbing?

Also, not featured is the bear and cub I saw on trail, only my third ever bear sighting, it was incredible.

While the state of this country is up in the air right now, and things are uncertain, the backcountry seems to be a safe space for me, and others. This is why it’s so important to protect our public lands. Most people I’m close to love to recreate outside, and I can’t imagine what my life would be like if I lost that opportunity.

Anyways, hope you enjoy these pictures from my trip. Get outside, and next time you find yourself in the woods, or even in your backyard, look a little closer. There is so much more life out there than you could imagine.
