Meet Ayden! At 22 years old, he runs a business helping fitness coaches in Vancouver. But as any founder knows, 80% of running a business is the mental game — and constant mind chatter can take a toll.

To gain ultimate mental clarity, conquer the inner noise, and come back ready to impact others on a deeper level, Ayden decided to embark on a journey of personal growth through a 10-day Vipassana silent meditation retreat in Thailand, sponsored by the Finn Wardman World Explorer Fund.

A 10-day Vipassana retreat has strict rules designed to create a quiet, distraction-free environment for deep introspection and mental purification:
* 10 days of Noble Silence — no talking, gestures, or eye contact
* 14-16 hours of meditation per day
* No phones, technology, books, or writing
* No physical exercise, except for short walking breaks

Vipassana retreats in the tradition of S.N. Goenka are completely free. There is no charge for lodging, food, or instruction. Everything is funded entirely by voluntary donations from past students who have completed at least one 10-day course and wish to help others have the same opportunity.

The Finn Wardman World Explorer Fund granted Ayden a personal growth bursary to help cover his flights to Thailand. In the spirit of giving, Ayden has chosen to graciously give back half of his awarded bursary and donate the rest towards sponsoring another grantee who might be interested in the Vipassana journey.

What type of traveler are you?

It turns out there have been studies done on the psychological behavior of travelers. The travel industry is a big business, and they want to know what people's motivations are for travel, as well as what types of travelers there are.

Travel types can be broken down into four categories.

Level 1: Local Travelers
These travelers like to stay close to home. They prefer day trips to nearby state parks, theme parks, or events. They like structure and familiarity when they travel.
A predictable sanctuary is enough to recharge and get a needed break.

Level 2: Domestic Travelers
This type of traveler is comfortable exploring their home country. They are interested in seeing landmarks, national parks, and famous cities.
The wonder and awe of seeing new things helps to shift their perspective.

Level 3: Cultural Travelers
This type of traveler is looking to immerse themselves in a new culture. They often travel solo, use local transportation, and stay out of the heavily touristy areas. They take a deep dive into the local food and history rather than focus on tourist spots.
This type of traveling creates a profound shift and builds empathy and expansiveness.

Level 4: Thrill-Seeking Travelers
These travelers want challenge and exploration. They might go backcountry camping, mountaineering, or bungee jumping. This type of travel typically leads to surrender and transformation. Take away the comforts of home, internet, hot showers, and routines, and you are forced to face your rawest self.

Yasmin Lorenzo—a 25-year-old marine biologist. In 2025, supported by the Finn Wardman World Explorer Fund, she lived in Costa Rica working on shark conservation with CREMA, before exploring the Galápagos Islands. In 2026, she took on her biggest leap yet: her first solo trip through Spain, Australia, and Indonesia.

From long layovers and iconic Sydney views to rainy days in Cairns and embracing the unexpected—Yasmin’s journey through Australia is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.

Travel isn't just about ticking off bucket-list dreams; it’s about learning to let go, improvise, and grow along the way. Hi! My name is Rogger, I’m a young Brazilian journalist, and I’m one of the 2026 grantees of the Finn Wardman World Explorer Fund.

I learned about the grant after befriending another fellow grantee, with whom I shared details about this adventure along with an idea I had that seemed impossible in practical terms. Yet, she told me that if I didn’t apply, the ‘no’ would always be there, and my project would remain on paper. As a result of a ‘Why not?’, I currently find myself in Syria, recording a websérie that gives a humanistic perspective on the lives of those who make the Middle East such a special and misunderstood place.

I can say, by far, this has been the most challenging and wonderful adventure I've ever had in my entire life. Thanks to the Finn Wardman World Explorer fund, I’m able to build an independent piece of journalistic work that contributes to a world where people are people, instead of numbers and casualties. This experience is a huge step in my career and in my own personal development. I couldn’t be more grateful to all those involved.

Rubi Ramirez Serrano, a Mexican biologist and one of the first grantees of the Finn Wardman World Explorer Fund.

In May 2025, Rubi was selected as one of our first grantees and, a few months later in September, she moved to the UK to pursue a Master's degree in Biodiversity Conservation at Nottingham Trent University. Over the past 10 months, she has embraced every part of the journey—from attending lectures and making new friends to experiencing life in a new country while working toward her dream of becoming a conservationist.

She is currently wrapping up her Master's in Biodiversity Conservation, researching critical wildlife movement patterns to help protect some of our planet's most important ecosystems. From her lectures in the UK to a summer of service in Sweden, she embodies what it means to live with purpose, adventure, and courage.

Every milestone Rubi reaches is a tribute to the legacy of love that started it all. Soon, she will return to Mexico to begin her lifelong career as a conservationist, and we couldn't be prouder to have her carrying the torch.

This is more than a grant, it's a living legacy.

This acceptance letter marks the beginning of something much bigger than a trip.

Our first grantee will step away from the noise of everyday life and into complete silence at a Vipassana meditation retreat in Thailand. No phones. No talking. Just time to slow down, reflect, and reconnect.

The Vipassana Reset was created to give young people the opportunity to pause, reset, and return with a fresh perspective.
