IDES 210: P1 - Ocean Park Series No. 12
My first project of interior design studio! Given our painting precedent I have reimagined the artwork into a pavilion which captured the essence of the painting and its cultural context, thus presenting “The Red Escape”. The title is conceived from the concept of transitioning from a red, secluded, and enclosed space into an area imbued with pastel colors, light, and air—elements missing from the initial space. This design is inspired by the canyons of California, where light guides visitors through and out of the narrow paths, creating a sense of escape and discovery, hence the title “The Red Escape”. The conceptual site is the gray pavement located at the west entrance of the Sheldon Art Museum.

The design was inspired by the analysis of Ocean Park Series No.12 (pictured on the last slide). The project consisted of the analysis of compositional systems, focal points/emphasis, light/shadow, and layers. I integrated the essence and context of the painting through my mood board, emphasizing the feeling of being above ground/in the sky and surrounded by California’s nature, such as mountains, canyons, beaches, and the beautiful pastel sunset colors. taken in University of Nebraska-Lincoln by @fionaportfolio.indd

D.Draw: Two Volume Dwelling Definitive Drawing

I absolutely loved the outcome of this drawing! It started off with the plan and elevation dimensions, then used left and right vanishing points to give proportional dimensions without creating distortion on the dwelling!◡̈ by @fionaportfolio.indd

Ddraw: Depth Cues: Landscape

- one of my favorite drawing assignments so far! Very proud of how the first one came out! The first drawing I was assigned to use graphite pencils, whereas the second one, we had to use pen or charcoal (i chose pen).

There were a list of elements that we had to incorporate (i.e. trees, structures, people, etc) and some elements were just for fun!◡̈ As for the landscape ideas, it was up to our imaginations!◡̈

1: A landscape of a romantic moment between two lovers. Love the floating lanterns (tangled inspired)◡̈
2: A landscape of a city◡̈ (def was a little rushed, but nonetheless, turned out good!◡̈) by @fionaportfolio.indd

DThink: Bottle Disposal Race 🌊🏝️

- After countless projects later, I achieved this beautiful photoshop piece that proposes a strategy to decrease plastic bottle pollution! This piece used research from previous system diagrams (not shown on this page) & more demographic information to create this fun activity that attempts to solve the crisis.

Game Rules:
There will be a timer that counts down. Each family that participates will have their own recycling bin! Once the timer counts down, each family has to properly dispose of the plastic bottles or waste they find on the beach into their bin (hence the bold red line that visually narrates that step). The family that disposes the most plastic bottles wins an ego boost and a prize! What is the prize? Local residents would offer a nature attraction tour for the family that wins! I had implemented that on the plastic bottle. It is offset due to the reason that it plays a second reason to why people would participate in this challenge than just purely collecting water bottles: to win the prize. The bubbles show the results of the game. Why bubbles? Well to blow a bubble you need a solution! This game is my solution! The outcome of my solution are bubbles that show the cleanliness of a beach and community bonding!◡̈

In my second slide describes the benefits of this acitvity and what it tackles in tourist areas where pollution is heavily concentrated (the red dash lines). It not only tackles the environmental aspect, but economy and socio-cultural aspects! How? With previous research, I’ve concluded that tourists won’t go to a place where it is heavily polluted with trash. Therefore, this activity helps clean up the beach, protecting the beauty of the environment, thus creating the desire of tourists to come stay. In addition, tourists don’t recycle as much because of the difference of place identity, as in, they don’t consider it as a home but rather a vacation place, so recycling is the least of their worries. I had to put myself in that mindset and think “what event or activity will people want to participate in while still engaging with recycling and the protection of the beach”? So I came up with this!◡̈ taken in Stop Pollution by @fionaportfolio.indd

D.Think: Cradle to Cradle Life Cycle of Plastic Water Bottles

-this project we were introduced to the life cycle of plastic bottles and we had to research how plastic bottles are produced chemically and manufactured. (this is indicated through the process with the red bold line). In this process, I included the first step aka fracking of oil and its effects of global pollution and dehydration of our soils. Then to the alterations and mixtures of chemical properties called PET and other polymers which leads to the molding and extrusion phase and manucfacuting phase. And Boom! The creation of a water bottle in a ✨nutshell✨! 🙌🏼

Afterwards, I decided to contrast the production process from the consumption and post-comnsumption process with the use of a Blue line. Why blue? Well after a plastic bottle is filled, it is filled with water (or other types of liquid), and blue resembles the color of water◡̈ 🌊Within the consumption process, it covers who consumes it (primarily us), the top 3 countries that consumes the most plastic water bottles, how it gets collected through recycling/garbage truck collector or through the deposit-fee system (where they get cents back for recycling). Speaking of recycling, I tried covering the 3 types of recycling that plastic bottles go through, and if they are not being recycled properly, the line leads to the negative impacts on our soil & third-world countries (since we push a lot of our waste onto them) and our air quality (burning of plastic). That is the cradle to grave cycle. Cradle to Cradle is achieved through the successful recycling as it repurposes the chemical properties and makes more plastic bottles and other plastic materials!◡̈

D.Draw: Sculpture to Landscape Contour Lines
swipe to see the process in reverse!◡̈

-i took a portion of the sculpture drawing and created a grand canyon/plateau type landscape!◡̈ I think it turned out pretty well! I feel like I need more practice with varying my density on contour lines but nonetheless, loved the process!◡̈ taken in Grand Canyon, Arizona, United States by @fionaportfolio.indd

i present you, ✨the ball✨

-introduces the use of shadows, lights, subtraction—using our erasers—and shades of charcoal for the upcoming self portrait that we start from a charcoal-based background, which we would have to subtract and map the structure of our face and experiment with the light sources and shading.

d.Draw Self-Portrait Progression ✔️
(swipe to see the progress!)
1. Initial Benchmark
2-4. Several Iterations
5. Final
6. Comparison 🪞

What I learned:
Definitely proportions are hard to crack… even the final product does not entirely resemble me, however! it was a good practice on how to measure my face with assisted perception (I used a pencil to measure my reflection’s facial measurements) and apply it on paper! In addition, I learned its good to stop looking at the mirror and trying to copy it and to just stop, take a step back, and compare yourself and the drawing. It makes a difference, im sure you can tell through the several iterations:,)

- d.Think: ✨Plastic Wastes Rule the World✨
My first detailed use of photoshop!◡̈
The Eidetic Image was inspired by several iterations of compositions in which was narrowed down to my own similar iteration of compositions.

In short: This class expanded my ways of thinking through research and creative design processes to create this eidetic image regarding the plastic waste management. This eidetic image is supposed to represent the problem of how there is lack of motivation to properly dispose of plastic waste and there may be lack of awareness & care of the negative effects on our environment and in our daily life.

Process: This started off with a drawn composition of shapes that would help create a grid of my elements. To determine my elements, I had to use my research about plastic usage, waste, and effects. The bottom of the design is a drain that is being blocked by the river of plastic pollution because it describes how cities were flooding due to the blockage by plastic bags and waste. Moreover, I wanted to convey the idea of lack of awareness: I placed people on top of the plastic as they only focus on heading to their stores

See as you see fit when taking a close look at each detail of the eidetic image! The story line helps represent my way of thinking, but yours may be different from mine◡̈
