Gio Ranch, Tuscany, Italy 7 Sept 2026
Day 4 of our ride was promised to be a shorter, relaxing ride. They lied! 🤣 Our morning was 3 hours of riding which finished with a steep, rocky decent through blackberries & over-grown trees. Ouch! But thanks to our superbly well-trained, strong & sure-footed steeds, we made it safely to our lunch destination.
There we were rewarded with a delicious picnic lunch & some wine tasting. Our return ride was indeed a relaxing 1 hour, & we were greeted with glass of Prosecco. Very sad to finish, but I was extremely grateful to cool off in the swimming pool. In the evening we celebrated our last night with cocktails & a dinner party, with included sage & butter ravioli, & a ragout made from the infamous local wild boar. by @fionatomney

Tuscany, Italy 6 Sept 2026
Day 3 of our ride was faster paced due to less steep climbs & sandier paths, so we had plenty of opportunities for trot & canter.
We rode for 2.5 hours to Montebelli Country Club in Gavorrano, we we enjoyed a 3 course lunch. We then rode for another 1.5 hours to get home for a much anticipated swim.
Matilda the miniature pony & Chardonnay the Silken Windsprite accompanied us throughout the day, although I have no idea how Matilda’s little legs managed it. She’d run, stop & eat, then run some more.
In the evening we were driven to another walled Medieval town called Caldana for a delicious 4 course dinner including lamb cutlets. by @fionatomney

Tuscany, Italy 5 Sept 2026
Day 2 of our ride was quite challenging with some very steep ascents & descents over very rough terrain. We joked that we had to put our horses into 4WD! We rode for our hour to reach the Medieval hilltop town of Vetulonia, then spent about about half an hour exploring the streets on our horses, whilst enjoying some spectacular views of the Maremma district.
We then stopped for a 3 course lunch with wine. I was practically napping at the table afterwards, but had to leave for a 90 minute descent back to our base.
It was then a cool off in the pool before cocktails & another 3 course dinner. This time it was prawns, sword fish & another delicious locally caught fish. by @fionatomney

Day 1 of horse riding in beautiful Tuscany.
Had a 90 minute orientation ride around the property followed by a swim, cocktails & then a 3 course dinner prepared by a local chef. Bliss!

We visited Vatican City with the Pope’s Museum, Sistene Chapel & St Peter’s Basilica. Of course the best bits didn’t permit photography, but the breathtaking artwork & architecture were incredibly beautiful. by @fionatomney

Rome, Italy 31 August 2026
Roman Holiday!
We disembarked from our cruise ship at Civitavecchia before 7am, only to hear that our accommodation in Rome had been cancelled. Fortunately, by the time we’d caught the train to Rome we’d found a stunning new apartment just a few minutes walk from Trevi Fountain. The cafe where we had our pasta lunch, was literally next door.
We finished our day with a walk to the Spanish Steps to watch the sunset. by @fionatomney

Pisa, Italy 30 August 2026
Yes, Pisa is a tourist trap full of wannabe influencers, dodgy merchants & trashy souvenir stalls, but the tower, cathedral & Baptistery are quite beautiful and worth seeing. The Leaning Tower was built in the 14th century as the cathedral’s bell tower. At only 56m tall, it was smaller than I expected. The marble brick work, columns & carvings are quite impressive, containing many different colours of marble, including the purple marble which is also a feature of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice.
We spent the hottest part of the day relaxing at on a beach at Nettuno Resort in Viareggio. It made me appreciate just lucky I am to have our beautiful beaches in Australia. by @fionatomney

Portofino, Italy 29 August 2026
Portofino on the Italian Riveria was absolutely beautiful, with its colourful, terraced, clifftop houses; manicured gardens & winding stairs & pathways. We walked down to a public beach, but wisely decided not to swim. Enjoyed spaghetti pesto with a Chianti for lunch. I’d loved to have brought that lemon tree home with me. by @fionatomney

Pompeii 27 August 2026
Volcano day!
Can you spot Vesuvius? Our visit to Pompeii was challenging due to the heat, but well worth the discomfit. It’s amazing just how much is still preserved after the 24 August 79AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Frescos, mosaics & the incredible streets. They don’t build roads like they did in 79AD! Some of the roads had chips of marble so that they would reflect moonlight. My photo of the woman who had been buried under ash (a cast, not her actual body) distorts her size, as she was actually very slight. We also saw the famous dog which even showed the detail of its teeth. by @fionatomney
