A tiny glazing trick that solves a frustrating problem.

Instead of grabbing your pot with dry fingers, coat your hand with glaze first before dipping. It helps reduce those annoying bare spots where your fingers were touching.

This is one of those “why didn’t I think of this?” techniques.

Using a slip trailer (or even a pastry bag) to build a mini pot instead of throwing it is honestly genius. You’re basically drawing the form in real time-layer by layer-while controlling the curves with your hand.

What I love about this
* ��Super beginner-friendly
* ��No centering struggle
* ��Teaches form + flow in a totally different way

I do a mini pot day every semester... and this is 100% getting added to the lineup. Check out @rhita.lamtahri page. She has some great content.

Pottery teacher reacts to a garlic grater! 🧄 This is honestly a perfect project for beginners. Simple form, super functional, and a great way to practice surface texture. I love how they added a spiral to guide the marks for the grating pattern — such a smart technique and it looks great too. Awesome job on this one. I’ll definitely be making some of these with my beginner classes!

Sometimes the best pottery tools are the ones you make yourself! 🙌

A plastic bat, some fluffy carpet, and hot glue?! Such a simple, low-cost way to make a trimming bat that helps support pots with uneven rims!
I’m definitely making one of these for the studio so my students can give it a try. Love finding creative solutions like this!

Pottery tools don’t have to be expensive… apparently you just need to go get sushi. 😂🥢

@haley.made.this uses the square end of a wooden chopstick to create the indent for the flange on a lidded jar—and this is actually such a great little hack.

I have a tool I made from a wooden modeling tool that basically does the exact same thing. But chopsticks? Free with your sushi, made of wood instead of plastic, and you could literally use them in the studio for years.

I’m grabbing some chopsticks this week and letting my students try this one out!

Think throwing pottery is hard? Try doing it blindfolded. 😂

Our students take on the blindfold challenge—making a pot from start to finish without being able to see the clay.

It’s a ton of fun, but there’s actually a purpose behind it. Without their eyes, students have to rely completely on touch—feeling the subtle movements of the clay, changes in pressure, wall thickness, and whether the piece is actually centered.

Does it help build better pottery instincts? Absolutely.

Do we mostly do it because watching everyone try is hilarious? Also absolutely. 😂
