If you needed one more reason to come to Shoja (again), here it is. 🍸🫒

YOUR FAVOURITE ROOFTOP CAFÉ NOW HAS A BAR!!! 🥹

And not just any bar — Himachal’s Highest Open Sky Bar.

(This is your cue to add @firgunhostel to your Shoja bucket list!!) 🫶

It’s cozy in that “I could sit here for hours and do nothing” way. The music hits the spot. The people are the kind you end up talking to for hours, as if you aren't strangers who just met but friends you've known all along.

But if you happen to be in your “let me just sit quietly with my drink” mood — this place gets you best at that too 🤍

Our guests will tell you our cocktails are too good to miss, especially the Hot Toddy!

And we don’t need to tell you about the view, do we? You already know the sunsets are unreal from up here 🥺

We won’t say much, but we’ll say this;

You won’t drink to get drunk here.
Because you’re not drinking to escape anything; you’re drinking to be here, to be present, to feel alive.

You’ll find yourself ordering a glass because the moment just feels right.

If that’s your vibe, let’s grab a drink soon, okay? We’ll save you a seat at the table 🤍

“How did you come across the name Firgun?”

Every now and then, one of you throws this question our way.

And every time, it takes us back to when this wasn’t even a place yet, just a blurry idea we were trying to bring to life.

A space where people could fully be themselves. Where people could come together and feel a sense of belonging. Someplace where joy multiplies simply by being shared.

From Google and Pinterest to old books and even dictionaries, we searched EVERYWHERE — even in languages we didn’t speak — for a word that could carry the weight of everything we were trying to build.

And yet, we kept hitting dead ends. Until one day, @chaoticvagabond accidentally stumbled across it.

Firgun.
(n) the simple and unselfish joy that something good has happened to someone else.

That was it.
Nothing else had come close.
It was everything.

When he shared it with the others, many said, “Find something more catchy. Something that sticks. Something easier to remember.”

But he held onto it. (And thank heavens he did 🤍)

Before long, we became “firgun wale” to the locals in the valley. And to the rest of you, we simply became “Firgun Shoja”

When we started nearly six years ago, we didn’t understand profits. We didn’t know business plans or marketing funnels.

We only knew that we wanted to bring this feeling into the world, create a community around it, and practice it as a way of life. Every. Single. Day.

Truth be told, it hasn’t been easy. We’ve been tested in ways we never saw coming– by circumstances, by people, and sometimes by ourselves.

There were moments we nearly gave up, packed up, and left this valley.

But the next day, one of you would come up to us and say, “Firgun healed me” and that’d become the reason for us to hold on and keep going for another day..and another..and another after that.

Until, somehow, here we are today, 5 years, 5 months, and 30 days later...

We’ve scaled, also failed, and learned many things the hard way. But we’re still here. Still creating. And it feels like we’re just getting started 🕊️

[SOUND ON 🔊] It has only been two months since we started hosting at Sajwar, but it already feels like this space has seen a lifetime of stories.

The most precious, heartwarming stories, moments, and memories 🧿 (and oh! – some very VERY competitive carrom games) 🫠

Every time we sit back in and look around, we’re filled with a kind of gratitude that’s hard to put into words.

Chapter Sajwar isn’t perfect. Far from it actually.
The roads are bumpy. The wi-fi throws tantrums. Our dog, Simba, licks you till you’re drowning in her drool (we’re particularly apologetic about her obsession with feet).

Yet, despite it all, you’ve all embraced this place with so much love, such unselfish warmth, and an endless kindness we could have only hoped for 🩷

So thank you.
Every single one of you who chose to be here despite all the odds – you’ve brought life into these walls.

You’ve made it home. You’ve made us better hosts, better people, and we hope you’ll keep remembering us as we remember you.

We’re lucky, so incredibly lucky, to have met you. We hope to see you here again soon. And next time, please stay longer 🥺

With all our love,
Team Firgun 💌

Summer of ‘26 🌻

We share a funny little love-hate relationship with summer at Chapter Shoja.

On one hand, it’s everything we wait for all year. The hostel is buzzing with energy, Appy’s singing has the entire room on its feet, and before you know it, complete strangers are exchanging Instagram handles, planning their next trip together, and leaving with stories they’ll tell for years.

But behind the scenes, it’s also the season that asks the most of us. This year, especially, pushed us harder than we’d like to admit.

Some days, it felt like nothing was going according to plan. We made mistakes, fixed them, only to realise there was something entirely else waiting to go wrong. There were days when we wondered if we’d stretched ourselves too thin and whether we were doing justice to the place we care so deeply about.

And yet, every time we look back at moments like these, all of that fades into the background. They remind us why we keep showing up, even on the hardest days.

There’s this beautiful thing about Firgun—it has a way of giving back more than it takes.

No matter how chaotic things get behind the scenes, every once in a while, kind-hearted travellers like you walk through these doors.

The ones who meet our imperfections with patience, embrace both the chaos and the calm with open hearts, cheer us on like old friends, and somehow leave this place a little better than they found it.

We may create the space, but it’s travellers like you who give it a soul.

So yes, we’ll complain about summer again next year. We’ll probably lose a little sleep, panic over a hundred things, and promise ourselves we’ll do it differently.

But we’ll still wait for it all the same.

Because no matter how much summer asks of us, it always gives us even more in return.

And that’s what makes every bit of it worth it 🤍

Long before kingdoms rose and maps gave names to mountains, the heavens are said to have misplaced a fragment of themselves.

For ages, it wandered between the heavens and the earth, belonging fully to neither. Until one dawn, it drifted above these mountains and, for the very first time, chose not to keep going.

Where it came to rest, rivers gleamed like ribbons of crystal winding through the valley. Forests grew deep enough to swallow silence. Meadows bloomed in colours unknown to the mortal world beyond these mountains.

Its guardians concealed it behind forests and veils of mist, lest too many wandering souls discover what paradise looked like.

To this day, clouds still descend low enough to kiss the earth. The wind hums forgotten lullabies through the deodars. Wildflowers bloom as though spring never learned how to leave, and every sunrise arrives as though the world is being created all over again.

Eons later, this land eventually found itself with a name.

Shoja.

Though somewhere above the clouds, they still mourn it as the heaven that chose earth 🕊️

It is hard to fathom what it feels like when one of you slides into our DMs with a picture like this.

Firgun, the simple, unselfish joy that something good has happened to someone else, inked onto your skin.

This word is only two syllables long. But it can take a lifetime to truly understand what it asks of you.

We are raised in a society that teaches comparison before compassion. We’re conditioned to measure where we stand, what someone else has, how far ahead they’ve gone, and where we’ve fallen behind. Before we even realise it, another person’s success instinctively begins to feel like our own failure.

To practise Firgun is to consciously interrupt that instinct. To celebrate anyway. To choose abundance where the mind keeps insisting there’s scarcity. To believe that someone else’s light doesn’t make yours shine any less. Not once, but over and over again, until it slowly becomes second nature to you.

Every time we see one of you get this word tattooed, it takes us back to the day we first stumbled upon it. It reminds us why we started Firgun in the first place.

We wanted to create a space that embodied this feeling. A place where joy multiplied simply because it was shared. A place that reminded people—and ourselves—that there is still so much goodness in the world.

There are days when we get caught up in keeping this place running. We worry about the future. We get distracted by numbers and reports. We lose sight of why any of this mattered in the first place.

And every now and then, we catch ourselves wondering what we’re really trying to leave behind. What is all this for? Is it worth it?

But looking at these photographs, the answer feels surprisingly simple.

This place was only ever a vessel. A small excuse to bring people together around an idea that the world desperately needs more of.

One day, these walls will wither away, becoming nothing more than dust beneath our feet.

But to know that the feeling of Firgun will continue to live through you—through conversations we’ll never hear, acts of kindness we’ll never witness, and lives we’ll never get to be a part of—that’s enough for us.

Don’t skip this advice if you are traveling to Jibhi/Shoja to experience snowfall 👇

1) Shoja currently has close to 3 feet of snow. Two-wheelers, hatchbacks, and buses will NOT be able to go beyond Ghiyagi. Jalori Pass is closed.

HRTC buses are operational only till Jibhi. Only 4x4 vehicles with snow chains can reach Shoja once the JCBs clear the roads.

If you don’t have a personal vehicle, you can hop onto a shared 4x4 cab or camper to reach Shoja.

Avoid travelling at night or early morning as there is black ice on turns.

2) Temperatures are currently in minus even during daytime. Water pipes are frozen. Running water might not be available at most properties. We’ll be providing hot water to in-house guests in buckets. It is recommended to carry wet wipes for comfort.

3) Please buy good snow boots from Decathlon. There is black ice on the roads. Without good footwear, you will slip and break a bone or two.

4) Due to high speed winds and snow storms, power lines are down. Electricity may not be available in Shoja after fresh snowfall.

Internet services are also inconsistent due to disruption of power and network lines. Please manage all your work deadlines and leaves prior to coming here.

And if you want to make the most of your trip when you’re here, here’s what you should do:

Stay at a higher altitude.
Skip this, and you skip the breathtaking view that makes Shoja special.

Sure, you’ll find snowy trees and white roads everywhere — that’s a given. But that’s a sight you can get anywhere in Himachal.

If you want the true “winter wonderland” experience, find a place that offers an unobstructed, panoramic view.

@firgunhostel is just that.
Perched at 8400ft, it is the highest hostel & rooftop café in Jibhi Valley, located just 4kms before Jalori Pass, with a sweeping view of the Dhauladhar ranges and the entire Jibhi valley at your feet.

Even if you’re not staying here, just visit the café and open sky bar for the view (and the hot chocolate!!) 🫶

But if you’d like to wake up to this view every single day..
