Finally: Belfast has a new record label.

Anam Records - founded by First Press Records’ Jason Hawthorne and And So I Watch You From Afar’s Rory Friers - has just launched with a clear-eyed manifesto & a debut release from punk outfit Mucker. Built around physical releases and what the label calls “aggressively human art,” Anam arrives as a pointed counterargument to the algorithmic churn of the streaming era.

We caught up with Jason to talk mythology, manifesto-writing, the ghost of Good Vibrations, and why the strange bits are usually the good bits. Link in bio 🜁

MASSIVE RECOMMENDATION.

Ghost Dubs - Oblique.

This is fucking brilliant.

Proper deep, murky dub techno. Bass everywhere. Everything else sounds like it’s happening in the next room.

My exact sort of carry on.

It’s on Kevin Martin’s Pressure label and Justin Broadrick, Regis and Pole are all big fans.

That’s basically a Which? Best Buy sticker for weird music.

Basic Channel, Pole, The Bug, Andy Stott - you know the drill.

WE’RE CLOSING AT 3 TODAY.

Anyway, look at these absolute freaks.

These are genuinely some of the cleanest 80s rock and metal records I’ve ever had through the shop.

Not “VG+ if you hold it at an angle”. Proper clean.

Sleeves are beaut. Posters, inserts and all the wee bits that normally vanished sometime around Thatcher still sitting inside loads of them.

Some honestly look like they’ve barely been played, which is mental. Imagine owning Peace Sells for nearly 40 years and just behaving yourself.

Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Motörhead, AC/DC, Dio, Sabbath, Helloween, Exodus, Zeppelin, Hawkwind, Blue Öyster Cult and loads more.

Master Of Puppets. Number Of The Beast. Powerslave. Ace Of Spades. Back In Black.

Basically somebody bought all the right records in the 80s, kept every single bit, and then treated the lot better than I treat my kin.

FINALLY.

The Third World-Underground @wewantsounds

I can stop looking at absolutely knackered Japanese copies on Discogs and doing the maths like an eejit.

Abdullah Ibrahim, Don Cherry and Carlos Ward live in Copenhagen in ’72. Spiritual jazz, South African rhythms, free jazz, huge piano. It’s completely loose and somehow never loses the plot.

Originally Japan only in 1974. Now back properly, obi and all.

THE GREATEST MTV UNPLUGGED EVER.

Yes, better than Nirvana’s Unplugged in New York.

I love Nirvana. This isn’t rage bait. Please don’t stand outside the shop pointing at me.

Alice In Chains - MTV Unplugged.

I don’t own many VHS tapes anymore because I have electricity and the internet, but I still own this one.

It’s flawless.

Layne is unbelievable. Jerry’s harmonies are unbelievable. The whole band are … unbelievable.

Down In A Hole. Rooster. Would?. No Excuses.

And obviously Nutshell, for anyone who woke up feeling a bit too pleased with how their life was going.

Absolutely devastating.

That’s basically the whole record. Four lads sitting down quietly and ruining your afternoon.

Back in stock this Friday.

Better than Nirvana.

I’ve said it twice now, so hopefully that’s cemented my stance.

I DON’T REALLY DO CDs.

I do, however, do Joy Division.

To a fairly unreasonable degree.

I’ve got a Joy Division tattoo, so I’m probably past the point of being impartial here.

Anyway, Eternal.

14 CDs and 2 DVDs.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Sixteen full gigs from 1979-1980, loads of live footage and a big book with Anton Corbijn and Kevin Cummins photography.

Some of the recordings are pristine. Some are old audience tapes and sound like old audience tapes.

Could not care less.

It’s basically a massive box of Joy Division at their absolute peak and I was never not getting it in.

BIG BIG ONE THIS FRIDAY.

@godfleshofficial - Decay. @relapserecords

Godflesh are the GOATs.

This is their penultimate album, which is news I’ve decided I simply don’t need.

Anyway.

Decay is an absolute beast.

Heavy, filthy, repetitive industrial misery. Basically everything you want from Godflesh and absolutely nothing you’d want playing at a child’s birthday party.

Nearly 40 years at it and Broadrick and Green still sound like they’re trying to knock a building down using a drum machine.

Class.

And look at that gold vinyl.

Very fancy for something that sounds this unpleasant.

MASSIVE RECOMMEND

We’ve had this since July and I’ve played it LOADS.

Like, loads loads.

So I’ve had more than enough time to decide whether it’s actually brilliant or I was just getting carried away again.

It’s brilliant.

Very much up my strasse these days. Noisy, repetitive, electronic, properly odd and somehow still full of absolute tunes.

The Dubs really do know how to do noisy post-punk.

Fair play. Annoying, but fair play.

I can safely say this is going to be one of my albums of the year. It just keeps getting better every time I put it on.

We’ve got a few of the deluxe and limited indies editions coming for Friday.

Get stuck into this.
