Hello everyone, amina here 🤎 There’s only 24 days to go until we open the doors to Our Modern Griots. As people of Black heritage storytelling is in our blood. The ‘Griot’, or ‘Jali’ is the west African name for an oral historian, storyteller, poet or any class of musician-entertainer of west Africa. Since watching Sinners (dir. Ryan Coogler) I’ve been pondering on who our contemporary storytellers are. Being able to work with @otismensah and @sile.sibanda has been a plan long in the works for bringing this to life in Sheffield, as poets, as artists and often as organisers themselves. Otis will be live in trio with @wolllleeeeee on keys 🤎 Calabash! was born to answer the question of who we are as black people who live in the north, in Sheffield, seemingly so displaced compared to other lived Black experiences, and we all share this local connection to our city of trees too. I chose the baobab tree imagery as a nod to this, a connection for us all from African heritage, but also as inhabitants of the city of Sheffield. Otis brings back tale of their experiences navigating a bustling, busy, and often times cold Berlin- in search of connection and intimacy through their latest release Come Beautify The Night. CBTN explores refuge and liberty for Black and queer bodies, where the act of beautifying they describe as a ritual of resistance. The ‘Night’ refers to that which is erased, and subdued. Bringing this work to @gutlevelsheffield is especially powerful for this reason. You’ll have seen and likely heard Sile in and around Sheffield as local BBC Sheffield radio host, poet and artist. She’ll be playing some of her favourite tunes to close the night and decorating the airwaves with RnB, hip-hop, soul and more. We have local supporting acts to be announced to join the stage and join the act of story telling with us. We’ll also be catered by @urbanfusion_ellabella again for west African vegan and meat options ✨ Tickets are live, and no one is turned away for lack of funds. Dm us if you’d like support to come especially PoC, Black, Trans+ people, students and those on low income ✨ Thank you to Luke for the beautiful artwork! @firstterracerecords by @firstterracerecords
‘the night is wet and enduring’ (ft. @lie__ning) - taken from @otismensah’s forthcoming album ‘Come Beautify The Night.’ An album that sits very close to our hearts, with love all the way from Berlin, Paris and Melbourne. So proud to announce my sophomore album ‘Come Beautify The Night’ out on November 13th. PRE-ORDER THE VINYL + MY NEW VIDEO & SINGLE NOW - 🔗 IN BIO. Falling quiet and entranced in front of various acoustic pianos across Yorkshire and Berlin, I began looking into the instrument as a mirror to self, mining it for the harmony and discordance I felt within. I looked to the piano as a source of sound to guide the emotion of every cadence. Approaching classical form with the fluidity and agency of free jazz, I took liberty to honour the art of making noise as a vehicle to the music. Come Beautify The Night marks a seminal evolution in my practice, as my first self-composed, produced and arranged body of work, to be released with London/Paris’ @firstterracerecords & Melbourne’s @partparcelrecs The first single from the album features the incredible @lie__ning & @_mwenje._ with a gorgeously rich video from @hamzalefaux that beguiles in the light of @artsiinaomii & Rugie Berg. Be sure to preorder this very special and exclusive vinyl drop pressed by @matteroffactvinyl, secure yours before they disappear on tour. More soon! Otis, First Terrace Records, Part & Parcel. Incredible cover photography from @steph_oconnor Amazing cover design from @blob.designs Funded by @musicboardberlin #freejazzvinyl #ambienthiphop #avantgardejazz #ambientjazz #experimentalrap by @firstterracerecords
