Sometimes you have to step away from the normal grind and do a little project for your friends. Over the last couple weeks we have changed a window into a door, and built a deck with some cool stairs outside that door for my great friends James and Kady. First pic is them with the boiz while we were all having a beer yesterday after completion. taken in Power of Positivity by @firstworldwasted

That’s a wrap on Clifton Ave, in West Asheville. Now we gotta play in the cold out in Burnsville for a bit. We framed and sided this place in justly over three months. Not bad for three covid scares, three holidays, Niels out for a month shooting his knee, working alone for a bit, etc. this is a pic of the finished product and my two favorite siding details. Holler at yer boi for all your waterfall entry needs. taken in Power of Positivity by @firstworldwasted

Almost bought boots today, but decided we needed to burn up some of this summer time that’s so quickly ticking away. taken in Power of Positivity by @firstworldwasted

New house, who dis?! Niels and I are getting a lot of new experience this year. From prefab trim to fences and foundation digging. On this house we’re doing everything from footings through framing. Including the metal work and poured concrete foundation. Since Covid-19 it has just been the two of us, hence the odd jobs. I was concerned with hiring people because I thought the bottom could fall out of the housing market at any time, which I still do. However, our area is historically pretty recession resilient, and I’m ready to be ripping again. We got some new guys coming over the next couple weeks and we’re gonna get the band up to eleven. taken in Black Mountain, North Carolina by @firstworldwasted

I thought I should update everyone on Clarabell, as many people have asked me what’s going on. We had our first appointment with an oncologist on Monday the eleventh, where they took further blood work, and did a biopsy of one of her masses. Under the microscope the doctor thought it was lymphoma, but he wasn’t sure because he had never seen it present in the way that CBs tumors are. However, upon return of results from the lab Tuesday morning, he confirmed that it is in fact Lymphoma. This was good news, because lymphoma responds best to chemo in dogs, and according to the doctor, dogs tend to handle chemo a lot better than humans. With this info we started chemo on Tuesday. As long as she hangs in there it could last as long as 25 weeks. She was also perscribed prednisone and an antibiotic. Prednisone is apparently like crack cocaine because she has had a lot more energy this week, and she has been eating a LOT more. Niels, Mikey, and I all agree that it looks like she has put some weight back on. We are very grateful for everyone’s contributions and all the love and help from everyone getting her to vet appointments so I can keep working, and bringing her snacks and treats. taken in Asheville, North Carolina by @firstworldwasted

Today we discovered that Clarabell has a cancerous tumor in her belly. Due to Covid and other hardships associated with being in the first couple years of starting a small business, I’ve started a Godundme to help pay for her treatments. I know that many people are facing financial hardships right now, and I know that many of you have already donated funds to keep your favorite establishments alive, but we’re asking for anything you have to spare. The gofundme and my personal Venmo will be linked in my bio. taken in Asheville, North Carolina by @firstworldwasted

These are strange times to be working in. Part of me feels like I need to put my money where my mouth is and stay at the house, as I would advise the rest of the world to do for the foreseeable future, but another part of me is happy to at least be able to go to work, and interact with one person. We are taking precautions that some may see as extreme, but truthfully I don’t give a fuck, because if it comes down to it, I’d rather be healthy and able to suit up in protective gear that I own, to produce masks, or gloves, or ventilator parts. The procedure to stay safe is fucking exhausting. I’m thankful that @teegraferox turned me into a habitual hand-washer as far back as mid January. @bionicmaxsteel2986 and I, who are the remaining people on site, are keeping each other informed of who each other have been in contact with, we are wearing gloves, we are sanitizing all tools multiple times a day, which the sanitization part is more in the spirit of having a system that is effective than actual concern. This, like air sealing or weather resistance in a home, is a procedure that I don’t mind seemingly unnecessary redundancies. Then if we are forced to work in close quarters, at least one if not both of us are wearing a mask. Furthermore, on days that we have had inside work, we worked from late afternoon until midnight, to avoid contact with mechanical subs we can’t verify the safety of. Continuing to work is also, at least for me, contributing to positive mental health. I’m a social person, it is a complete nightmare to not be able to be with the people I love, but that’s what we have to do right now. Good luck to everyone. taken in Asheville, North Carolina by @firstworldwasted

Here’s the place we’ve been working on. You wouldn’t believe it by the photos because it looks sunny in many of them, but we’ve been getting totally hammered with rain. Despite that, we’ve been crushing this place. I haven’t posted much in a while because I haven’t thought about it. I’ve been trying to get the crew up to speed, and keep deadlines, and just make sure shit is rolling, social media is fun but it’s not the most important part of this job. This is the first of a fifteen home development, but we’re gonna have to roll out and build some other stuff while they get the infrastructure of the neighborhood ready. taken in Asheville, North Carolina by @firstworldwasted

If you’re ever feeling like you have something holding you back, just remember that perhaps the most impactful president in United States history could not walk. And for what it’s worth, managed to conceal that fact for the most part, from the American public for 13 years. If you want it bad enough, you can do it. by @firstworldwasted

It’s not too often that I actually get to come check back up on houses in their more final phases, mostly just because I forget and that’s a low priority errand. HOWEVER, I had to come back over to this place today because some water was getting under a bottom plate in the basement and I wanted to lay eyes on it. I think the problem will be resolved with relative ease. This house was my personal most challenging build to date, and from what the builder tells me, all of his crew, the homeowner, and even some other builders that walked through we’re singing the praises of our framing. I hope that makes up for us taking six weeks longer than I originally told him. 😬 taken in Alexander by @firstworldwasted
