EARLY ICE AT WEKUSKO IS COMING. ❄️🎣

The first ice of the season is one of my favourite times to be on the water. Walleye, rainbow trout, brook trout and pike are all on the list, and those early-ice days can be something special.

I’ll be at Wekusko Lodge this winter and I’m starting to fill early-ice guiding dates now.

Currently on my way home from Manitoba, I couldn’t pass up the chance to make a quick stop and fish the tail end of the Pink Salmon run. Got a few nice specimens in the net before getting back on the road. I love these fish! 🎣🍂🇨🇦

One thing I’ve really started appreciating while guiding for lake trout is just how beautiful their heads are. The colours, markings, eyes, and patterns are all so unique from one fish to the next.

I took a few close-up shots of some of the lake trout my guests and I have caught while guiding. When you get a chance to slow down and look at the details, these fish are pretty incredible.

I get a lot of questions about what exactly I do when I’m guiding for lake trout. This video is probably the best way I can explain it.

There’s a lot more that goes into it than just dropping a lure down and hoping a fish bites. Finding the fish, reading their behavior, adjusting throughout the day, and figuring out what presentation they want all play a big part.

This is probably the best way I could explain what I do when I’m out there guiding for lakers.

Another guiding season comes to an end, and once again, it feels like another chapter for the books.

From Lake of the Woods to Ena Lake, Tazin Lake, and Kamichawie, this season brought plenty of new challenges, new water, incredible fish, and even better memories. Every lake and every group of guests teaches you something, and that’s one of the things I enjoy most about guiding.

A huge thank you to all the guests who trusted me to be their guide this season. Getting to share those special moments, first fish, personal bests, and trophy catches is what makes this job so rewarding.

Also a big thank you to all the guides, lodge staff, managers, and owners I had the chance to work alongside this year. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make a season successful, and I appreciate everyone who played a part.

Now it’s time to take a little break, look back on a pretty incredible season, and get ready for whatever comes next.

How cool is this?

Almost to the same week, one year apart, my guest caught this same lake trout last year, measuring 39.75”. This year, Nicole Stone had the opportunity to catch her again with Brody Bayton as her guide and she measured 40”.

Looking at the photos side by side, you can see the same unique markings and fin characteristics. She grew a quarter inch in a year, and we were lucky enough to cross paths with her again. And what even crazy both time he hit a bondy special 😂

This is exactly why catch and release is so important. Taking care of these fish and putting them back healthy gives them the opportunity to keep growing and allows someone else to experience catching that same fish again down the road.

Today was supposed to be a scouting day on Lake Kamuchawie… and boy, did it ever pay off.

We decided to explore some new water and see what we could find. Over 30 walleye later, I’d say the mission was a success. We’ve always known this lake has some absolute monsters swimming around, but finding them in new areas makes it that much more rewarding.

There’s something special about putting the time into a fishery, figuring out new spots, and having it all come together. Today was one of those days where the scouting definitely paid off. And glad to be part of it to come down to bakers narrow lodge

At this point, it’s just getting silly with the number of master-class fish we’ve been seeing! At bakers narrow lodge Kami lake

A few fish over 40”, over a dozen Master Class lake trout, and some absolute giants chasing down the Bondy Bait. The bite has been absolutely insane.

We even managed to break two reels on giant lake trout — fish that were clearly in a completely different class, and unfortunately, we’ll never know just how big those ones really were.

The Bondy Bait has been absolutely on fire for these lakers!

Kami has been producing some absolutely incredible lake trout. Another day, another handful of fish that you just don’t see every day. From baker narrow lodge

New group, new trip, and another crazy day on Kami!
From bakers narrow lodge

Today we landed one of the craziest-looking lake trout I’ve ever seen in my life. The coloration on this fish was absolutely wild — such an odd, unique, and incredibly cool-looking laker.

You never know what these northern lakes are going to show you, and today definitely didn’t disappoint. Another unforgettable day on the water! And of course bait of choice bondy baits #LakeTrout #LakeTroutFishing #LakeTroutFishing #TrophyLakeTrout #followforfollowback
