Squeal! 🥳🥳 Our bilingual music toy books just won the Creative Toy Awards! What makes this recognition special is knowing that the judging panel were families who are themselves raising children from multicultural households on an exciting bilingual journey. This means everything. ✨🥹Since starting all of this, I've often wondered how these creations should be 'labelled': are they simply children's books, toys or something in between? Do they belong in the sound book aisle for early readers, or in the foreign language section? The truth is, I've never liked labels. They can feel limiting when in reality, these books straddle worlds that's part children's books, toys, part language bridge - probably part something else too! ✨ I think it's that openness that allows families to decide for themselves, the many joys that these special bilingual music toy-books can bring into their world is what makes them so special.If my time in the US has taught me anything, it's how much Thanksgiving means to my American friends. 🧡 It's also taught me to take a moment to pause and appreciate that sense of coming together. When I created Fish Tales & Rhymes, I wasn't just thinking about helping children learn Mandarin. I was thinking how we could keep curiosity alive beyond the traditional text book and make language something children genuinely look forward to.School may be out for the summer, but learning doesn't have to stop. Through folktales, poems and rhymes reimagined through songs, I look forward to sharing the love of my work so children not only spark a curiosity for a new language, others can enjoy bringing together culture and language, letting music and play become part of their everyday world.❤️#multicultural #bilingualkids #mandarinlearning #childrensbooks #culturalheritage by @fishtalesrhymes

Wishing you and your little ones a wonderful Dragon Boat Festival! 🎋🐲It's time to unwrap and devour parcels of sticky rice delights! We all love a Zong zi to commemorate the occasion. And while the chances of watching a Dragon Boat race locally may be few and far between in the UK, this multicultural household always do their best to celebrate it in some form or other. Check out the classic rhyme Round & Round / tuán tuán zhuàn / 团团转 that is featured in my bilingual musical sound book Festive Nursery Rhymes in Mandarin. Originally written in Cantonese, we managed to reimagine a version in Mandarin that's worked really well. A quick fly by trip to China recently and i stumbled across a Dragon Boat Festival in Guangzhou. 🐲 Co-incidence or not, the stars were aligned! 💫Thank you cousin Teresa for standing in the sweltering 29 degrees heat -- just to let your "Banana" cousin be entertained by this massive cultural tradition up close, tens of thousands of miles away from home. I mean, how many times in my lifetime will i get to experience this again? 🥹I was about 11, the last time I remember watching Dragon Boats rush past me down the Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong. MAKE LANGUAGE LEARNING FUN AT HOME!Like most parents, I am constantly finding screen-free ways to keep little ones curious, connected, and learning - without the guilt of constant gadgets.But…let's be honest. My kids are getting older and Screen Gen didn't become a label by accident. 😬It's the Dragon Boat Festival on the 19th June and we’ve created some fun puzzles including a word search and more, for kiddos like my boy to stay connected with their culture. Combine it with a song about the festival, and it's a win-win! 🐉What I tell myself is that screen-free doesn't always have to be a negative thing either. It just has to be intentional. KEY TAKEAWAYS: ORGANIZING COMMUNITY PROJECTS! 💕The weather gods were on our side last weekend at @vauxhallfarm - Our event at the gorgeous community farm in the heart of London gave families a chance to not just meet the animals up close, but also be part of a fun workshop to show how the sounds we hear in different languages shape our understanding of the world. Putting the event together taught me something. Not everything went to plan but when I recall the days in the corporate world, I had to remind myself that it was also important to look at what did work. The room was full. When I looked around at the families who showed up, most of them weren't necessarily people who'd found me through weeks of carefully-planned marketing. They were walk-ins (thanks to the persuasive and charming natures of my tweenage niece and her friend).🫶Families who simply happened to be at the farm that afternoon, stumbled across what we were doing, and were curious to find out more.What I realised was, sometimes the people you're meant to reach aren't always where you think they'll be. You can plan every post, and the families that resonated with your mission might still find you through a completely different door. The lesson? KEEP KNOCKING. Keep showing up in as many places as you can. Because you genuinely never know which door opens 🐷🌍A huge thanks to the @vauxhallfarm team, my little helpers including my amazing sister-in-law @nbeaufond who came to support on her birthday!
