Wednesday 30 September 8pm: Alex Merritt/Steve Fishwick Quintet 🎷🎺

Based in Bristol saxophonist Alex Merritt @amerrittsax has, over the last few years, been steadily building a solid reputation as fluent and powerful improvisor, a composer of great skill and originality and a respected educator. He has recorded two albums for the Barcelona-based Fresh Sound New Talent label as well as producing, composing and performing on their 30th anniversary album “Common Threads”. Steve Fishwick @fishwick_stev is widely regarded as one of the finest jazz trumpeters to come from the UK, sharing the stage with the likes of Ron Carter, Anita O’Day & Cedar Walton.

Alex and Steve take the tenor/trumpet frontline into fresh, exciting, directions drawing on a wide spectrum of influences from contemporary jazz to classical music, performing a mix of classic jazz quintet material as well as original material from themselves and award-winning pianist John Turville. Their debut album 'Mind-Ear-Ladder' was released on Fresh Sound New Talent in 2022 to significant critical acclaim and the gig tonight features the aforementioned @johnturvillemusic John Turville-piano along with @conormurraybass and @ethansweeting_ Ethan Sweeting-drums.

It’s hard to come back down to earth after a night like last night!
I’m humbled by the support and generosity of you all ❤️
Last night was one of those evenings that reminds me why I love jazz. ✨
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at the 606 Club for the launch of my new album, “Stolen Moments”. Despite the extraordinary heat, the club was full of the best people, you know who you are! It meant so much to see familiar faces—including friends who travelled all the way from Kent to celebrate with us. 🙏🏻💫
Every note felt alive. My incredible band brought such generosity, sensitivity and fire to the music: 🎺 @fishwick_stev - internationally acclaimed trumpet virtuoso! 🎸 Stephen Bridgland - My long time Maestro on guitar! 🎹 @francesknightcomposition - whose exquisite touch on the piano never fails to move us. 🥁 @matt_home_drums - bringing subtlety, swing and mega chops when let loose! 🎻 Jerome Davies - holding it all together with his beautifully expressive double bass playing
Thank you also to Dave Barros @digitaldave.media for capturing these wonderful moments so beautifully through his lens, and to Sam for making us sound our very best.
“Stolen Moments” is a deeply personal recording. I wrote my original lyrics inspired by Oliver Nelson’s timeless composition, and there’s also a poem that found its way into the album - a moment that wasn’t planned, but simply arrived and was improvised in the studio.
It reminded me that some of the most honest, magical moments in jazz can’t be rehearsed. They appear unexpectedly, are shared once, and then they’re gone... little stolen moments of expression.
To everyone who came, listened, applauded and shared the evening with us - thank you. You made our album launch one I’ll never forget. ❤️@606Club
