There’s too much to experience, too much to learn, and way too much good food to eat before I turn 65.

Take the PTO. Drop the kids off at grandma’s house. Book the flight.

Is hiking Lion’s Head in Cape Town worth it the 3AM wake up call?

Lion’s Head is one of Cape Town’s most recognizable peaks, sitting between Table Mountain and Signal Hill. From the trail, you get incredible views across Cape Town, Table Mountain, the Atlantic coastline and the surrounding mountains.

We woke up around 3 AM and started hiking in complete darkness so we could reach the top before sunrise. The hike took us about an hour, even with a pretty large group.

I’d rate the hike as intermediate. It’s not extremely long, but there are steep sections, ladders, chains and some climbing involved.

But watching the sunrise from Lion’s Head? There’s nothing like it. Seeing the sky change and Cape Town slowly come into view below us was easily one of my favorite moments in South Africa.

We booked a guided sunrise hike through @getyourguide with The Cape Town Local for about $50 per person. Tauriq was so cool!

📍 Lion’s Head, Cape Town
🥾 Difficulty: Intermediate
⏱️ About 1 hour to the top
🌅 Go for: Sunrise

Save this for your Cape Town itinerary.

One of my favorite things about CultureCon was seeing so many young Black creatives expressing themselves, creating content and exploring careers in the creative industry.

There’s something powerful about being in a space where people are experimenting, networking, and figuring out what their path could look like.

I’ve seen a lot of conversations about #CultureCon this year, and I do think constructive criticism is important. We should be able to talk honestly about how Black spaces can improve while also understanding why those spaces exist and who they’re meant to serve.

Sometimes you may simply realize you’re no longer the core audience, and that’s okay too.

I also loved seeing so many Black-owned businesses throughout the event.

@blackricanvegan’s chop cheese egg rolls were so good, and I’m not even vegan. 🤌🏿

And @2girlscookshop ? The chop cheese tacos with plantain took it over the edge. Their sorrel was also probably the second best I’ve had. My grandma still has the crown. 😂

Supporting Black culture means supporting the creatives, entrepreneurs and businesses building within it too.

Namibia is home to just over 3 million people, but you don’t really understand how vast the country is until you start driving through it.

We would drive for hours to reach some of the country’s most beautiful places, sometimes without seeing another car. Just endless roads, desert, mountains and wide-open landscapes.

Namibia is the kind of place that reminds you just how big the world really is.

If you love adventure, nature, road trips and a little solitude, put Namibia on your list.

The only part I could’ve done without? Driving on the left side of the road. 😂

Where to eat in Cape Town, South Africa 🇿🇦

People sometimes ask how I find restaurants when I travel, and there’s really no science to it. I use a mix of recommendations from friends, social media research, and @googlemaps once I’m actually in the city to see what’s nearby and highly rated.

Here are some of the places we tried in Cape Town:

📍 Kloof Street House
My pick: Grilled Ostrich
This was my first time trying ostrich, and I was surprised by how much more it tasted like beef than chicken. The restaurant itself is also beautiful

📍 The Black Sheep
My pick: South Indian coconut fish curry
A neighborhood restaurant with a changing blackboard menu, so what you find when you visit might be completely different.

📍 Iron Steak & Bar
My pick: The Wagyu burger
Definitely one for the meat lovers.

📍 Nish Nush
My pick: Chicken Shawarma
A casual Middle Eastern spot on Bree Street that was perfect for a quick meal.

📍 Love Matcha
My pick: Pineapple Iced matcha

📍 Knysna Oyster Company
⭐️ My pick: The fried oysters +sushi
I’m not usually an oyster person because of the texture, but fry them and we good to go!

What I loved most about eating around Cape Town was the variety. Try something completely new or just find a really good version of something you already love.

Save this for your next trip to Cape Town.

What restaurant should I try when I go back?

What is a South Africa safari actually like? Here’s what a full day on an African safari looked like at Tintswalo Safari Lodge in the Manyeleti Nature Reserve. 🐘🦒🦏

Our days started with an early morning game drive, followed by breakfast, time to relax around the lodge, lunch, an evening game drive, drinks and snacks in the bush, and dinner. Honestly, the food was a close second to the animals we saw.

We visited during South Africa’s green season, which is considered a quieter time for safari. The bush was lush and beautiful, but all that greenery also gave the animals plenty of places to hide. There was never a guarantee we’d see a specific animal, even when searching for the Big Five, which honestly made every sighting even more exciting.

Our guide, @matt.crookes , and tracker, Elvis, helped us find wildlife and taught us so much about the bush along the way.

This was my first safari, and 3 days and 2 nights was nowhere near enough. I probably would’ve stayed at least two more days.

Safari is so much more than riding around looking for animals. It’s the landscape, the food, the people, and the excitement of never knowing what you might see next.

Would you go on safari? And do y’all want the breakdown of exactly how much ours cost?

Ten years of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. 🖤✊🏾

I was in Washington, D.C. for opening weekend back in 2016, and what a time to be alive.

Seeing generations of Black history, culture, struggle, innovation and excellence represented in one place was something I’ll never forget.

The museum is a powerful reminder of everything Black people have accomplished in this country, even through all the obstacles we’ve faced and continue to face.

Our history deserves to be preserved. Our stories deserve to be told. And our contributions deserve to be celebrated.

Happy 10th anniversary, @nmaahc. Here’s to the next 10 years of telling our stories. 🖤

I still think about my first day on safari in South Africa.

Being out in the wild and seeing these animals this close was the coolest thing I’ve ever did. There’s something completely different about seeing an elephant, lion, giraffe or zebra in their natural habitat instead of through a screen.

Growing up in Detroit, I never imagined I’d one day be sitting in the middle of the African bush, camera in hand, having my own little NatGeo moment.

We stayed at @tintswalo_safari in Manyeleti Nature Reserve, and this was literally DAY ONE. I had no idea how incredible the next few days were going to be.

It was exhilarating, humbling and one of those travel experiences that reminded me just how big the world is.

I’ve been yearning to get back ever since.
