Are you playing the game or THINKING your way through it? 🧠

You put in the reps. But when it’s time to compete, you’re thinking about every movement instead of trusting what you’ve trained.

When things go wrong we start thinking about how we’re “suppose” to do it, or how we look like, or if people care that we messed up….

I’ve caught myself doing it, too. One thought about my swing turns into another, and suddenly my attention is everywhere except the next pitch.

In this clip from Mindset Monday, Shami and I talk about recognizing that shift and bringing your focus back to the play in front of you.

Something new is coming 🧃🧠

October 12th, Mindset Mondays begins!

I’m excited to partner with FitMind Performance to have conversations about one of the most important and often overlooked, parts of performance: the MIND.

Whether it’s athletics, your career, relationships, or life in general, we all need the mental fortitude to face adversity, work through challenges, and even learn how to handle success.

I’ve seen so many athletes, young people, and families navigate that mental battle… and you don’t have to do it alone. There are strategies, tools, and information that can help along the way.

Every Monday, you’ll get an athlete’s perspective + an expert’s knowledge, real experiences paired with practical strategies you can actually implement into your own performance.

Beyond mechanics.
Mental performance.

Mindset Mondays — October 12th. 🧠

Talent creates potential. Mental skills help you access it. The two together help you sustain it.

When you expect and anticipate the inevitable, you are more prepared to handle them than when you expect things to go well.

This is your competitive advantage and a key component to consistency.

Here’s what to think: My season will have its ups and its downs. My highs won’t be too hign and my lows won’t be too low. I have a plan of attack for any circumstances that will deter me.

Then you need to have a plan. Your plan needs to be what works for you.

One of my core strengths is helping people navigate this well. Reach out and let’s talk!

The next time your progress feels messy, remember: a detour isn't the same as a dead end. Keep moving forward. 📈💪

Don’t get me wrong, the bigger contract is nice, the championship ring is definitely a goal. Recognition feels good.

These things will come.

However, the habits you build, the discipline you develop, and the resilience you gain along the way stay with you for life.

Every challenge you face is shaping more than your results, it's shaping your character and its all actually what is sharpening your competitive edge.

So don't let your worth be defined by the finish line. Let it be defined by the person you're becoming through the process.

Here’s how you’ll know you’re on the right path when you are:
Responding vs. reacting
Communicating professionally
Open to collaboration when appropriate
Trusting your process even when things aren’t going your way

Because in the end, the greatest achievement isn't just reaching the goal.
It's becoming someone capable of achieving it and sustaining it. 🏅🧠

⬇️ Save this for the days you're tempted to measure your worth by the scoreboard instead of your growth.

Comparison is a natural part of being human, but when it becomes your primary point of reference, it can quietly shift your attention away from what actually drives progress.

It's easy to compare your beginning to someone else's middle, your setbacks to someone else's highlights, or your timeline to someone else's milestones. The problem is that comparison rarely gives you the full picture. This will paralyze you. Stop doing it now.

Not every athlete develops at the same pace.

Some players receive scholarship offers earlier. Some earn playing time later. Some experience breakout seasons after years of quiet development. Those differences don't determine your potential. They shouldn’t even be considered.

You need to read this:

The athletes who continue improving aren't the ones constantly looking sideways. They're the ones who stay focused on what they can control: their preparation, habits, mindset, and daily effort. They notice where they have improved and where they need growth. That’s what you need to focus on only.

Use comparison only for your gain. If they are playing better, notice what they are doing. If you can use anything you get from that to your advantage, use it. That should be the only thing you’re doing when you compare.

Every performance starts long before game day.
In one of my recent conversations with my baseball mentor and friend, Jason LaRue, a former MLB catcher of 12 seasons, we talked about something that separates prepared athletes from those who simply show up: having a plan before the moment ever arrives.

The way you spend your time when no one is watching, the routines you build, the habits you choose, and the preparation you commit to all shape how you perform when it matters most.
As Jason said, being proactive dramatically increases your odds. You may not control the outcome, but you can control how prepared you are when opportunity comes.

Every intentional decision creates another opportunity to improve, learn, and grow. And the more opportunities you create for yourself, the more likely you are to reach the outcome you're working toward.

What's one intentional habit that's helping you become a better athlete, leader, or performer?

When someone considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time talks about performance, it's worth paying attention to.

Despite his extraordinary talent and accomplishments, Willie Mays understood that success isn't determined by physical ability alone. Skill can get you into the game, but your mindset often determines how you respond when the pressure rises.

Every athlete, leader, founder, and professional will face moments of uncertainty, setbacks, and self-doubt. The difference isn't whether those moments happen, it's how you think and move through them.

That's why the mental game is crucial. Training your mind to stay focused, adaptable, and resilient is just as important as developing your physical skills.

As Willie Mays reminds us, the shape of your mind may be the greatest competitive advantage you have. ⚾️ 💪

My baseball mentor and friend, Jason LaRue, and I recently talked about one of the biggest mindset traps athletes fall into: comparison.

The biggest mistake athletes make?
Comparing their journey to someone else's.

No two athletes have the same upbringing, experiences, nervous system, challenges, or opportunities.
We all carry different stories that shape how we think, perform, and respond.

That's why success isn't about trying to become someone else.
It's about discovering what you're capable of and building a system that helps you reach it.

When you're intentional about what you do outside of the game, you give yourself more opportunities to improve. And while a plan doesn't guarantee success, it dramatically increases the odds that you'll get there.

❌ Stop asking:
"Why am I not where they are?"

✅ Start saying:
"Today I will..."
Because your only competition is the person you were yesterday. 💪⚾️

The good news? These thinking traps aren't permanent.

The first step isn't trying to eliminate every negative thought, it's recognizing when your mind may be leading you toward an unhelpful pattern.

The more aware you become, the better equipped you are to respond intentionally. 🧠 💪

Save this post and refer to the steps below for the next time you find yourself in a thinking trap:
Reflect on your thought patterns
Determine if your thought patterns are helping or hindering you
Reframe your thought patterns to identify the appropriate next steps

Mental strength isn't about pretending fear, doubt, or uncertainty don't exist.

After the Knicks' historic comeback, Jalen Brunson was asked whether he thought about the possibility of losing when his team was down by nearly 30 points. His response resonated with so many people because it reflected a healthier view of performance:

"You're allowed to think about the worst possible scenario, but you gotta go out there and do something about it."

High performers are willing to acknowledge difficult thoughts without letting those thoughts make their decisions.

Whether you're leading a team, competing in sports, or navigating a challenge in your personal life, doubt may show up. What matters most is what you choose to do next. 🏀💪
