Titanic Style

Titanic Style explores the world of fashion and dress at the time of RMS Titanic’s famous voyage. With stunning images and enlightening historical analysis, this book takes us through the wardrobes of passengers and crew of all classes and ages, from the most intimate undergarments to the warm overcoats needed on that last fearful, cold night.

The ship was a microcosm of post-Edwardian society, in which everyone belonged to a particular class and dressed accordingly. The luxurious attire of the ladies in first class, the cream of European and American society, was changed several times a day, while the more sober and conservative clothes of the men of all ranks subtly conveyed their status, and children were dressed to enhance their social standing. by @fitnyclibrary

Dior Icons Of Fashion

This beautifully illustrated book for every lover of fashion includes never to be forgotten images of Christian Dior's designs, and illuminates the talent of the man who was France's most unpredictable and spectacular fashion designer. Christian Dior was a French fashion designer who founded the iconic fashion house Dior in 1946. He was known for his elegant, feminine designs, and his use of luxurious fabrics and intricate details. Some of his most famous designs included in the book are:

The "New Look" silhouette - Dior's debut collection in 1947 featured a new silhouette that emphasized the female figure, with nipped-in waists, full skirts, and rounded shoulders. This look was a departure from the boxy, utilitarian styles of the wartime era, and it quickly became a sensation. The Bar suit - this tailored suit was a cornerstone of Dior's early collections. The jacket featured a cinched waist, padded hips, and a deep V-neckline, while the skirt flared out from the hips to create a full, feminine silhouette. The Miss Dior dress - this elegant, off-the-shoulder cocktail dress was inspired by Dior's love of flowers. It featured a fitted bodice and a full, flared skirt, and it was often made in soft, romantic fabrics like silk and tulle. The Diorama dress - this dramatic evening gown featured a fitted bodice with a high, structured collar and a full, sweeping skirt. It was often made in rich, jewel-toned fabrics like velvet and brocade, and it was a favorite of Hollywood actresses like Elizabeth Taylor and Marlene Dietrich. by @fitnyclibrary

Slow Style Home

A home decorating book for people who are tired of rooms that look perfect, are full of ridiculously expensive objects, and present a lifestyle that doesn’t match up with anyone’s actual daily experience.

“Zuraw outlines her ‘slow style’ approach, which draws on the 1970s slow food movement and the early 2000s slow fashion movement to counter mass production, help readers accumulate meaningful items over time, and consider the environmental impact of their purchases….readers new to design will benefit from the fun exercises, as when Zuraw lays out a step-by-step guide to creating a vignette with items one already owns. by @fitnyclibrary

Single shots featuring a photo of Ronnie Rojas himself!

Part 3 of our 3 part spotlight on a new collection recently acquired by the Special Collections & FIT Archive. The collection features a large variety of different photographs and negatives taken by noted Cuban-American photographer Ronnie Rojas (1927-2012). There were too many amazing photos to share that one post would never do the collection justice!

Rojas was primarily a commercial photographer in mid-20th century New York City. While Rojas typically focused his work on commercial and brand advertising, he also photographed weddings, engagements, and headshots. He shot for clients such as Hermes Rocket portable typewriters for reporters, B. West Decorators, the American Tobacco Company, and Herman Miller.

Azzedine Alaia And Christian Dior

In Tunisia, when he was still a teenager, the young Azzedine Alaia (1935-2017) first discovered the creations of Christian Dior (1905-57) through the fashion magazines of Madame Pinault. In 1956, he undertook a brief four-day internship at Maison Dior, immersing himself in the unique atmosphere of a fashion house, observing the work of the head of the atelier and witnessing the creation of a collection. Alaia would speak of this seminal experience with emotion for many years to come.
Through dramatically staged photographs of notable ensembles, Two Masters of Haute Couture offers a dialogue between the designs of Azzedine Alaia and Christian Dior. Bearing witness to a shared sensibility over time, the volume manifests the couturiers' concepts of style and creation that respond to each other across decades. by @fitnyclibrary
