How to Not Chock an Airplane!

After parking, place the chocks snugly against the front and back of the nose wheel to keep the airplane from rolling in either direction.

Push them firmly against the tire, set the parking brake only if recommended by your aircraft manufacturer, and always verify the airplane is secure before walking away.

A small habit that prevents big problems. Good pilots don’t just fly well…they park well too.

🇺🇸 AIRSPACE EXPLAINED: PART 1

The United States uses six airspace classes: A, B, C, D, E and G. There is no Class F here.

CLASS A
Generally begins at 18,000 feet MSL and extends through FL600. Unless authorized otherwise, operations must be under instrument flight rules, with an ATC clearance.

CLASS B
Surrounds the busiest airports. Its stacked shelves resemble an upside-down wedding cake, generally reaching 10,000 feet MSL. You must receive an explicit ATC clearance before entering.

CLASS C
Typically has a 5-nautical-mile surface core and a shelf extending to a 10-nautical-mile radius. The shelf usually starts 1,200 feet above airport elevation; the ceiling is typically 4,000 feet above airport elevation. Establish two-way ATC communication before entering.

CLASS D
Surrounds towered airports, generally from the surface to 2,500 feet above airport elevation. Establish two-way ATC communication before entering. Actual boundaries and operating hours vary.

CLASS E
Controlled airspace serving approaches, airways and en route flying. Common floors are the surface, 700 feet AGL or 1,200 feet AGL. VFR entry generally requires neither ATC contact nor a clearance.

CLASS G
Uncontrolled airspace wherever A, B, C, D or E has not been designated. Near the ground, it often lies beneath Class E. “Uncontrolled” still means pilots must follow flight rules, meet applicable weather minimums and see and avoid other aircraft.

AGL means above ground level. MSL means mean sea level. Always check the chart for actual airspace floors and ceilings, and the Chart Supplement for operating hours.

🇺🇸 AIRSPACE EXPLAINED: PART 2

VICTOR AIRWAYS
Highways in the sky connecting VORs, identified by “V” and a number. Generally Class E from 1,200 feet AGL to below 18,000 feet MSL, normally 8 nautical miles wide.

TFR — TEMPORARY FLIGHT RESTRICTION
Restricts flying for events such as wildfires, presidential visits and major sporting events. Read the NOTAM for boundaries, altitudes, times and entry rules.

SVFR — SPECIAL VFR
An ATC clearance allowing flight below normal VFR weather minimums in qualifying airport surface airspace below 10,000 feet MSL. Airplanes need at least 1 mile flight visibility and must remain clear of clouds. Takeoff and landing require 1 mile ground visibility when reported. At night, instrument qualifications and IFR equipment are required. Some airports prohibit airplane SVFR.

MOA — MILITARY OPERATIONS AREA
Military training airspace. VFR entry does not require a clearance, but check activity status, contact the controlling agency for advisories and exercise extreme caution.

RESTRICTED AREAS
Marked “R” and a number. May contain artillery, missiles or aerial gunnery. Entry requires authorization when restrictions are in effect. Verify status before entering.

PROHIBITED AREAS
Marked “P” and a number. Flight is prohibited unless specifically authorized by the using agency, generally for national security.

U.S. ADIZ — AIR DEFENSE IDENTIFICATION ZONE
A security zone requiring aircraft identification. Generally requires an IFR or activated Defense VFR flight plan, radio communication, an assigned transponder code and position reports.

WARNING AREAS
Marked “W” and a number. Offshore areas beginning 3 nautical miles from the coast that may contain hazardous activity. Entry is not automatically prohibited, but check activity and avoid hazards.

Check current charts, NOTAMs and airspace status before flying.

We’re not seeing any results in the gym, so we’re stopping by tomorrow in person to see what’s going on!! 🤣

The thing you don’t want to memorize… is probably the thing you need to memorize.

The FARs aren’t just checkride trivia. They’re the rules you’ll use throughout your flying.

Want to impress your examiner? Don’t just know how to fly the airplane..know the regulations that make you a safe and legal pilot.

Study the FARs. Know the rules. Become the pilot others look up to.

POV: My friend says he knows how to fly.
Me: “Great. Keep it on the centerline of runway.”
Him: “The whole runway?” 💀 #aviationhumor #pilotsofinstagram #pilotlifestyle #funny by @fitpilotdon

Learn how to calculate weight and balance. Weight times arm equals moment.

She always wants to take more… but the airplane gets the final say. 😂✈️ Here’s how to calculate weight and balance…and find out whether that extra bag gets a seat or stays home.

Save this for your next flight lesson. Who’s the overpacker in your crew?

I usually drive through Billings and Clever heading home to Nixa from the Aurora airport. Figured I’d check out the route from up here this time. 😂

Same small towns, whole different view.

Losing weight and earning your pilot’s license have something in common: wishing won’t get you there.

The workouts you want to skip. The studying you keep putting off. That’s where discipline matters.

If the FAA written is hanging over your head, make time today. Open your ground school. Learn the material. Every study session brings you closer to that cockpit.

Send this to your future pilot who needs to get that written done. 👊

The new Nixa roundabout is taking shape, and they’ve got the road all torn up now! 🚧 Flew over today and grabbed this video of the progress. Looks a whole lot different from up here.

Who’s ready for the construction to be done? 😂
