The Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs prepares students to be the global leaders and changemakers of tomorrow.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Last week, author Ruperto Long joined Dr. Jorge Grünberg, President of ORT Uruguay, for a conversation on "The Girl Who Watched the Trains Depart". The book follows the author's mother, Charlotte de Grünberg, who fled Nazi-occupied Belgium as a child, survived the Holocaust in hiding in France, and rebuilt her life in Uruguay. Moderated by Dr. Gabriela Hoberman, the discussion traced the history behind Charlotte’s story and the themes that run through it: resilience, solidarity, memory, and hope. Guests stayed afterward for a book signing, with Long personally inscribing copies. Thank you to everyone who joined us. taken in FIU Steven J. As the 2026 midterm elections approach, the Green School brings together distinguished alumni Mercedes Schlapp and Michael Hernandez for a timely conversation on American politics and the issues shaping this year’s elections. Representing different perspectives across the political spectrum, Schlapp and Hernandez will join faculty moderators Eduardo Gamarra and Kathryn DePalo-Gould for a thoughtful exchange designed to foster civil discourse, explore differing viewpoints and demonstrate how constructive dialogue can deepen our understanding of the upcoming elections. Hillel at FIU and Global Jewish Studies of the Green School of International and Public Affairs were proud to welcome Noa Tishby, Jonathan Elkhoury, Fatema Al Harbi to campus for a conversation about Israel and the fight for peace in the Middle East. “Voices of the Middle East” from @eighteen18 brought facts that rarely reach campus: a region that is diverse, changing and quietly building new bridges. Thanks to sponsors Dorothea Green Lecture Series, Ruth K. & Shepard Broad Distinguished Lecture Series, JG Legal, and the Gordon R. Miller Charitable Trust. The Kimberly Green Latin American & Caribbean Center (@fiulacc) launched the Latin American and Caribbean Trailblazer Lecture Series this week with a talk from Gaston Taratuta, founder and CEO of Aleph and a 2022 EY Global Entrepreneur of the Year.

An FIU alumnus, Taratuta spoke on the opportunities and challenges facing Latin American entrepreneurs competing in the global digital economy, including how artificial intelligence is reshaping the future of work and what that means for higher education in the region. Aleph, a digital infrastructure that connects global platforms, advertisers and financial services to the fastest growing digital economies, operates in more than 130 countries and has trained hundreds of thousands of people through its Digital Ad Expert initiative.

Presented in collaboration with the @fiueconomics and @fiubusiness, this event provided students with a unique opportunity to engage directly with a global leader whose work continues to shape the future of advertising, innovation and entrepreneurship. We are grateful to Mr. Taratuta for sharing his insights and experiences and for taking the time to connect so generously with our students.

This series will continue to bring distinguished leading Latin American voices to the Green School community, and we look forward to hosting the next iteration of the Trailblazer Lecture Series very soon! taken in FIU Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs by @fiu_sipa

Mohamed Ghumrawi, assistant director of the Mohsin & Fauzia Jaffer Center for Muslim World Studies and professor in the Department of Politics & International Relations @pir_fiu, was 11 years old in Boynton Beach when the horrific events of 9/11 happened. He remembers being called a terrorist at school the next day, and watching Muslims across South Florida shorten their names to avoid suspicion.

In an interview with WLRN, Ghumrawi reflects on how that same us-versus-them framing is resurfacing today, driven by rhetoric around Sharia law, the war in the Middle East and a political climate he says has abandoned the inclusivity efforts of the post-9/11 era. He also pushes back on the false idea that Islam is at odds with American life, pointing to the shared roots Islam has with Christianity and Judaism.

Twenty-five years ago today, the world changed. On this anniversary of September 11, 2001, the Green School joins the FIU community in remembering the nearly 3,000 lives lost and honoring the first responders, service members and families who have carried the weight of that day ever since.

As a school dedicated to understanding global affairs, we recognize that September 11 transformed not only American foreign policy but also the study and practice of international relations, security and diplomacy for a generation. The lessons of that day continue to inform our teaching, research, and commitment to public service.

We remember, we reflect and we carry this history forward. by @fiu_sipa

Join us for the opening reception of the exhibition Project Dastaan, an award-winning peacebuilding initiative that preserves and shares the personal stories of those who experienced the 1947 Partition of British India. Through historical narratives, oral histories, animation, virtual reality and symbolic objects, the exhibition explores the forces that shaped Partition and its enduring legacies through stories of loss and resilience, displacement and belonging. These stories speak to a shared human history shaped by conflict, separation, grief and hope.

Enjoy food from across the Indian subcontinent while we explore how remembrance and empathy can build bridges toward reconciliation, mutual understanding and peace. RSVP in the link in our bio. by @fiu_sipa
