As a globally recognized tigure moving through culturally symbolic cities, James Bond becomes a reference for understanding how identity is constructed through environment. Miami is constantly changing, with a high flux of people moving in and out. In designing a performing arts center, Miami’s dynamic culture and forward-looking spirit must be addressed. The building acts as a malleable form shaped and eroded by its surrounding cultural and urban landmarks, becoming a tangible representation of Miami’s dynamic spirit.The form lifts off the ground and draws in the landscape, blurring the boundary between inside and outside. These include a freshwater Everglades conservatory, a pollinator Insectarium, and, as the primary exhibit, an Amazonian Várzea Forest ecosystem. The design of these conservatories draws upon the structural logic of the lily pad as a model for greenhouse architecture. In collaboration with internationally acclaimed French architecture and urban design practice Coldefy, we are pleased to announce the selection of “The Porch” by architects and educators Elmer O. García and Olga Kusche-Iglesias, as the winning proposal for the “Triumphal Arch” Open Call.This project emerged through Bakehouse Art Complex’s longstanding relationship with Villa Albertine and the French Consulate General in Miami, through which Bakehouse regularly hosts Villa Albertine residents and supports cultural exchange initiatives in South Florida and Paris. During their 2025 Villa Albertine residency in Miami, Coldefy principals Thomas Coldefy, Isabel Van Haute, and Zoltán Neville developed the concept and open call brief following visits to Bakehouse and conversations around the organization’s history, mission, and role within the Wynwood Norte community. Their residency in Miami, centered on green space integration, climate resilience, equity, affordability, and cultural diversity in urban environments, closely aligned with the Bakehouse’s vision for its community garden.The open call invited Miami-based artists, architects, designers, and students to radically reinterpret the idea of a gateway or triumphal arch for a temporary community-centered public installation at Bakehouse’s expanding Wynwood Norte campus. Eric Goldemberg Studio: The Radical Hive- Housing Amalgamations Fabiana Garcia Reconstructing Genoa’s Lost Geography Can housing, conceived as an extension of ground, transform genoa’s reclaimed marina into an inhabitable artificialterrain through topographic mass andwater-basedspatial organization?This project responds to the disconnect between Genoa’s historic identity and its modern waterfront. While the city’s heart is defined by a deep, vertical relationship with the mountains, the reclaimed marina has become a neutral, horizontal plane. While the historic city is defined by its mountainous landscape, the marina exists as a flattened condition that has lost the essence of Genoa’s identity.The project brings Genoa’s terrain back to the waterfront, reconstructing its lost geography through a continuous topographic mass. Rather than existing as separate buildings, housing, circulation, and public space are carved into a continuous terrain, subtly shaped and oriented by the presence of water.Leah Edmondson-Wood, Fragmented Continuity: Reimaging Social Housing in BegatoMass social housing, particularly in post-war developments across Italy, often prioritized efficiency and scale at the expense of social and spatial quality. The “Diga” complexes in Begato, Italy illustrate these failures, where large, monolithic structures have led to isolation, disconnection, and a weak relationship with the surrounding Ligurian hillside landscape.This project proposes an alternative approach through fragmentation. RDF Lab and the Institute of Environment hosted a 2nd and 3rd fieldtrip, welcoming high schoolers for a Living Shorelines experience. The museum begins underground, where carefully placed openings bring natural light into the gallery spaces, Each volume reaches toward the surface to capture sunlight during different seasons. As these forms appear above the ground, they become part of the landscape and reflect the mountainous character of Denver.
