What do this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry winners and FIU Chemistry professor Raphael Raptis have in common? A fascination with molecules that are mirror images of each other!

In 2019, Raptis and his team developed an iron-based material capable of telling these molecular twins apart — a discovery with potential implications for drug development.

FIU researcher Matthew Shirley is featured in the October issue of National Geographic magazine. Shirley’s research on dwarf crocodiles is highlighted in the Explorer’s Spotlight. He is the sole scientist actively researching the only known permanent cave-dwelling crocodile population. Shirley is also interviewed in a story in the same issue on the conservation of pangolins — one of the world’s most trafficked wild mammals. Shirley leads the international initiative Operation Pangolin, which is providing critical insight into the elusive and threatened animals. That project has received core funding support from the Allen Family Philanthropies.

Sleep is more than rest. 💤🧠

Our FIU researcher Dr. Aaron Mattfeld, a psychology professor and cognitive neuroscientist, and FIU alumnus Franco Fuertes are exploring how anxiety may be connected to the brain systems that help regulate sleep in preteens.

Their work is shedding new light on the connection between the pineal gland, sleep, and anxiety during this important stage of development.
