Four storeys of Venetian palazzo wrapped around a glass-roofed courtyard in the middle of Boston. Isabella Stewart Gardner built it in 1903 to house a collection she arranged entirely herself — paintings, sculpture, furniture, and textiles she’d gathered across decades of travel.

The silks and tapestries are the part we keep coming back to. Hung as wall coverings, worked into whole rooms, given the same weight as everything else on display.

Still arranged exactly as she left it.
