Banned-books memory: This tiny tale was confiscated from me as a youngster because the church directed my very Catholic parents to do so. As an adult, I stumbled across a vintage copy and couldn't resist. I especially love that this is a "book club" edition, and that somewhere, perhaps another pre-teen and her friends were reading it with their parents, then discussing and ALL learning something.

Commemorating Filipino American History month with a small-but-not-so-small story:

Around the late '40s, my mother and her family immigrated to Hawaii from Ilocos Norte, a northwest province of the Philippines. Grandpa had secured migrant work on Oahu, so they moved into Kunia Camp, about 12 miles from the North Shore. (Today, Kunia Camp is on the National Register of Historic Places, and it's the last intact plantation community under single ownership on Oahu.)

Even as a young girl, Mom toiled under the sun alongside her brother, father, and mother, picking and hauling pineapple for Del Monte. Years later, she made her way to nursing school, left Hawaii, and set out on a series of adventures that included army stints in Korea MASH camp units and Walter Reed Hospital.

Eventually, Mom landed in Seattle where she fully embraced PNW life, trading palm trees for evergreens … and she loved the snow. "Honey," she once told me, "I used to hit the slopes before my nursing shifts!" Fast-forward to her meeting my father at Seattle University, then taking on one of her biggest adventures -- raising a family.

As we got older, Mom briefly returned to the workforce, clerking for Seattle Public Library, then running a high school library. During her final chapter, she battled a long illness, but our brave matriarch stayed as long as she could, having become a grandma.

In the last photo, one of my nieces is pictured, enjoying a little island time. Mom passed away before it was taken, but I like to think she's happy, somewhere, seeing that Hawaii is now a place where her granddaughters go to relax and revitalize.💛
