‼️HEADS UP, HIKERS!‼️Breakneck Ridge, Wilkinson Memorial, and Lower Brook trailheads, and the Breakneck Ridge Train Station remain closed this spring and summer🌷.👷Why? 👷 FOREST TRAIL NORTH CONSTRUCTION UPDATE 👷‍♀️Work is underway on the Nimham Extension trail, which will connect the in-progress Wade's Hill parking lot to the existing Nimham Trail. 🚵 THE POWER OF TRAILS 🚵‍♀️The value of trails extends far beyond giving people a place to explore and recreate. They're also major contributors to the vitality of the communities they connect.Recently, our friends at @parkstrailsny completed a study of New York's Empire State Trail and found that the 750-mile span generates $1.87 billion in annual economic output, supports nearly 10,000 jobs, and attracts 9.75 million visits each year. The research also found that trail users support local businesses, with users spending money at restaurants, shops, lodging, and other destinations along the way.As work on the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail continues, studies like this help illustrate the many ways thoughtfully designed trail systems can benefit both residents and visitors, while enhancing connections between communities and the outdoors. 🏡 THE FUTURE OF DUTCHESS MANOR 🏡Built in 1868, this Second Empire architectural gem on the National Historic Register has long served as a much-loved gathering space for folks from the Hudson Valley and far beyond - hosting weddings, sports dinners, baby showers, 100th birthday shindigs, and everything in between.You'll soon notice construction at the site as HHFT begins to renovate the structure and grounds, with plans for adaptive reuse of the storied building as a visitor center, office space, and hub for education and events.Several 20th-century additions will be removed to restore the building to its original footprint, and the surrounding landscape will be rewilded with native meadow systems and plantings of more than 300 native trees to support pollinators, birds, and long-term ecological health.For complete information about this transformative project, download our annual report at the link in our bio.#HudsonValley #History #ILoveNY #HudsonRiver #BeaconNY by @fjord_trail

Recently, students from the @conservationdiscoverycorps at @ctbeardsleyzoo joined the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail team for a day of learning, collaboration, and environmental stewardship.The CBZ crew learned about the mission of the Fjord Trail, why combating invasive species is critical, and how ecological restoration helps protect native habitats. In return, HHFT staff gained valuable insight into how the zoo engages visitors through artifact demonstrations, family and school programs, and visitor data tracking.Then everyone headed into the field, rolling up their sleeves to remove invasive Asiatic dayflower and Japanese honeysuckle from the Fjord Trail's Upper Overlook site, making a real impact while gaining hands-on conservation experience. 💚Partnerships with like-minded organizations and the critical work they produce are only possible with the support of our community. 🌿 PARTNERS IN RESTORING THE RIVERFRONT 🌿Recently, the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail Natural Resources Team partnered with the @nystateparks Taconic Regional Invasives Team to tackle invasive mugwort at Dockside Park in Cold Spring. Not only does this aggressive plant blocks scenic river views, it also crowds out native plants that provide critical habitat for wildlife and pollinators.Removing mugwort is a long-term project that will take multiple growing seasons, but every step helps restore biodiversity and strengthen the health of the Hudson Valley's remarkable landscape.Work like this is ongoing, and we need your help to increase our impact.
