For 125 years, the Flagler Museum has been a treasured part of Palm Beach and an enduring link to the people, stories, and traditions that have shaped Florida’s history. As a National Historic Landmark of such significance, the care and preservation of this magnificent property is both an ongoing responsibility and a privilege.

As part of our ongoing commitment to preserving Whitehall for generations to come, the Museum will temporarily close from Tuesday, September 29 through Monday, October 5 to allow for essential preservation work. We look forward to reopening on Tuesday, October 6.

While our doors will be closed during this period, our commitment to the stewardship of this extraordinary place remains steadfast. The care that we invest today helps ensure that the Flagler Museum can continue to inspire, educate, and welcome visitors from all over the world. by @flaglermuseum

There’s always time for tea...🫖

Afternoon tea was a cherished social ritual during the Gilded Age. Mary Lily and Henry Flagler often joined their friends and guests among the palms of the Cocoanut Grove for tea and conversation.

Henry Flagler recalled this afternoon in a letter to Mina Bissell, dated August 17, 1910, saying, “Thousands of times I have recalled the happy days of that winter when you were with us at Palm Beach, and I am wondering whether you have yet, the photograph of the Five o’clock Tea in the sun bonnets.”

Taking a closer look at “The Cardinals” by Paul Schaan 🎨

Our founder, Jean Flagler Matthews, purchased this painting from Trosby’s, a prominent estate auction house and art gallery operating in Palm Beach, Florida, and Atlantic City, New Jersey from the 1950s through the 1980s. She bought it the same year she acquired the Whitehall Hotel and established the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, Inc., on June 5th, 1959, as a nonprofit corporation.

Find it on view today in the Music Room ✨

Our bags are packed for a trip down memory lane this Monday 🧳

Before Henry Flagler’s marble-pillared estate opened as a museum in 1960, it operated as the Whitehall Hotel with the opening of an attached 300-room addition. The hotel’s ten-story tower no longer exists, but its legacy lives on through artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia preserved in the Museum’s archives. by @flaglermuseum

📸 The Master Suite today vs. 1902

#Didyouknow Mr. and Mrs. Flagler shared the Master Suite? At the turn-of-the-century, this was an uncommon practice. Affluent couples in the Gilded Age frequently slept in separate bedrooms or had separate beds in the same room. by @flaglermuseum

Allow us to reintroduce the Music Room

Last spring, in preparation for “Golden Hour: Charles Courtney Curran and the Romance of American Impressionism,” the paintings in Whitehall’s Music Room were carefully deinstalled for the exhibition. Now, some of our most beloved works have returned to their 1902 positions, alongside others from the Museum’s collection.

Their return offered our curatorial department an opportunity to take a fresh, more intentional look at the room. Originally designed by Carrère and Hastings as the Art Gallery, the space has always held a dual identity—one where art and music could live together.

The Music Room can now be experienced in four movements, unfolding from the doorway toward the organ. Works collected during Flagler’s lifetime appear alongside those that entered the collection in later generations, through our founder, Jean Flagler Matthews, the Kenan family, and gifts to the Museum. Rather than conceal that history, the reinstallation embraces it.

Come experience the Music Room anew. Get closer to more of our masterpieces than ever before. by @flaglermuseum

On Wednesdays, we wind clocks 🕰

Before smartphones, wristwatches, and alarm clocks, families relied on clocks like these to keep daily life running on schedule. But these beautifully crafted timepieces didn’t run on their own, they needed, and still need, weekly winding to keep their pendulums swinging and their chimes ringing.

Each Wednesday, Museum staff must follow a specific procedure to make sure the inner workings of each clock are kept in tip-top shape. Listen closely during your next visit, and you might just hear the same chimes that echoed through these halls when the Flaglers were here! by @flaglermuseum

“In loving remembrance of the day you became my wife and the many happy days you have given me since our marriage…,” wrote Henry Flagler in a letter to Mary Lily on their ninth wedding anniversary.

#Onthisday in 1901, Henry Flagler married Mary Lily Kenan at Liberty Hall, the Kenan family home in Kenansville, North Carolina. Palm Beach has its share of love stories, but few can rival the one written by Henry Flagler and Mary Lily Kenan. It wasn’t just a marriage – it was a meeting of the minds, a confluence of art, ambition, and adoration. by @flaglermuseum
