Trailering is one of the most physically demanding things we ask horses to do.

It places a significant load on their respiratory system, even on short trips. Veterinarians often use
the term “shipping fever” to describe transport-associated respiratory disease.

Behind the scenes, the respiratory system is dealing with multiple challenges at once: the horse’s head is often elevated making it harder to clear dust and bacteria, they’re exposed to dust and road debris, stress hormones rise temporarily lowering immune defense, and hydration drops thickening mucus in the airways.

The result is a reduced ability to clear bacteria and debris, increased airway inflammation, and a delayed return to peak performance. Respiratory challenges after shipping are common, even in horses that appear completely normal on arrival. That’s why trailer recovery is so critical. The time after the trailer isn’t just downtime, it’s when the respiratory system works to clear accumulated debris, rebalance, and restore efficiency.

A Canadian Championship and two trips to the CFR don’t happen by chance, it’s a result of precision, partnership, and a program where performance starts at the nose. #FLAIRAmbassador Jayden Wilson continues to set the standard, and we’re so proud to support her as she chases faster times and bigger wins in and out of the barrel pen.

Tayla Moeykens, of Three Forks, Montana, has won on nearly every stage, from college rodeo to a National Finals Rodeo qualification. She's garnered more than $449,750 in EquiStat reported lifetime earnings, and she's well on her way to qualify for her second NFR. In the Women's Professional Rodeo Association she's currently sitting No. 7 in the world standings with $81,497 in 2026 season earnings so far.

Barrel Horse News caught up with Moeykens while she's been on the road during a recent stop in Texas. Here's a brief look at a day on the road with a professional rodeo athlete.

Following strenuous exercise such as intense training or competition, recovery generally occurs in three overlapping phases 😮‍💨

1️⃣ Cool-Down Phase: occurs immediately after exercise and focuses on returning the horse’s breathing rate, heart rate, and body temperature back to normal rates.
2️⃣ Rest Phase: occurs over the next 12-24 hours in which important processes such as restoration of muscle glycogen (energy stores), repair of muscle fibers, normalization of electrolyte balance, and clearance of metabolic by-products take place.
3️⃣ Full Recovery Phase: may take up to several days depending on exercise intensity and is when the horse’s body completes longer-term restoration processes such as rebuilding muscle energy reserves, repairing microscopic muscle damage, restoring neuromuscular coordination, and returning to peak performance readiness.

Choose gratitude. Because there’s always something worth appreciating. The horse beside you. The opportunity to ride. The lessons you’re learning. The memories you’re making.

Gratitude has a way of reminding us just how much we already have. ✨ by @flairstrips

Getting the full benefit of your FLAIR® Equine Nasal Strips comes down to a few simple steps:

✅ Bend only the edges of the Strip, never fold it in half. This preserves the internal support structure designed to support optimal airflow.

✅ Apply to a clean, dry nose. Dirt, sweat, and oils can interfere with adhesion. Wipe the hair upward first to help improve grip and stay in place.

✅ Press and hold for 30 seconds after application. The warmth of your hand activates the adhesive for a secure and removable bond.
