|| 1 YEAR OF MARINATE ||

This project started off as two friends having a niche hobby. A year down the track we could have never imagined that we would have the opportunity to collaborate with so many incredible people.

We are still pinching ourselves.

A huge thank you to all the artists, organisers and friends that have supported us along the way - we wouldn’t be here without you. 💖

We can’t wait to see what the next year brings.

Love,
Ruby & Luke xx by @flamclick

Introducing @flamclick a slight deviation from the sounds you’d ordinarily anticipate from BDK… Regardless, we are always excited by unique, artistically rich projects created with an unconventional approach—a criteria thoroughly satisfied here.

The Doorless EP is yet another benchmark of live improv progression. Spanning from low key even beats, to high octane odd time rompers.

3 years in the DAWless journey, fingers have begun to assimilate to the machines, achieving humming hardware breaks out of ‘00s samplers, and seqs from synths of yesteryear, connected by the sync giving MIDI-chlorians.

This mixtape is a sample of how enjoyment can be found from creating ideas in a live setting, and putting the spontaneity of the artist on display.

The creative process for each of these tracks were conceived, jammed and recorded within a day, no post editing/mixing. Resulting in one take wonders; warts and all. Striving to achieve a more performative symbiotic relationship with organic transitions, hardware loopholes and a live set to tape experience. The emphasis on using music tech to not just explore techno, but expand technical ideas such as odd time signatures and strange signal paths.

The front half is an all too familiar 4/4 stomp, bopping through minimal ambient breaks on ‘Gravity Assisted Manoeuvres’, then some flute vs bass funk in ‘Plato’s Wave’. The back end of the release sees two drum heavy explorations pulsing in 5/4. A prog jungle journey, ‘The Faux Rush’ gradually layers breaks and pads, culminating in a cosmo-melodic soup. Hi Five 4.0 gets a revival as ‘Down Low...’ & ‘...Too Slow’, running 727 percussion over apocalyptic scenes to close out the mixtape.

Much appreciation to Grant Turismo for the spruce up on the outboard bounce, ensuring the finest fidelities without digi-assistance.

Inspiration this season:
Alphonse, Pizza Hotline, 5am, Pluto, FloPo & FlyLo

All tracks improvised and recorded live within 24 hours of inception, using ‘The Hive’.
