What can ancient traditions teach us about the choices on our plates today?

At FLAME University, Prof. Pankaj Jain (@profpankajjain) explored animal ethics across Jain and Hindu traditions, from the reverence for the sacred cow to the symbolism of the compassionate lion. The lecture examined how ahimsa (nonviolence) shapes perspectives on food, fasting and vegetarianism, raising questions about the role of religion, culture and conscious choice in what we eat.

By connecting centuries-old philosophies with contemporary debates on food ethics, the discussion invited us to reflect on our relationship with animals and the choices we make every day.

At FLAME, learning encourages us to question familiar perspectives and discover new ways of understanding the world
