DE BOGEN VAN OOST
For this first course of the urbanism master at the @academievanbouwkunst, I explored the potential of the Muiderpoort area in Amsterdam Oost. My research revealed both its beauty and its challenges: the railway forms a hard barrier between two distinct neighbourhoods, while the nearby Dappermarkt is under pressure.

These findings inspired a proposal to open up the railway embankment with arches accommodating a mix of functions. My main design principle was to create clear sightlines through the arches, from west to east. Allowing people to see and be seen would help connect both sides and support a sense of safety.
Taking the Dappermarkt as a starting point, I proposed extending the market eastwards, with stalls occupying some of the arches. Together with shops, workshop spaces and places to eat and drink, these functions would bring people to the area at different times of day.

The aim is to turn a barrier into a place to meet and stay, creating vibrancy, strengthening social connections and supporting safety through more eyes on the street.

Yesterday it was time to present my design for my first ever landscape architecture course. It has inspired me so much and I will definitely take my findings into future projects.

In my design I’m using current height differences to design the landscape to let water into the Groot Duivendrechtse Polder. This newly formed wetland functions as an ecological corridor connecting the allotment gardens near Duivendrecht to the Amstel. This not only improves water quality but also drastically improves biodiversity numbers and recreational value. Last but not least the area can be used as a water retention zone when water levels in the Amstel are high ✨

During my research dived into the world of Dutch water systems and nature inclusive shores. It has been challenging but above all, inspiring.

“De Nieuwe Werkplaats”

What if industry wasn’t pushed out of the city, but became part of the city?

For this project, my groupmate and I designed a future where industry helps shape urban life instead of being separated from it. During the studio, we realized: industry doesn’t just occupy a city, it builds it.

The axonometric drawings highlight the vibrant, layered character of this future scenario.

As you can see in the floor plan, the area is divided into five zones (left → right):

0. Mobility Hub

1. 24/7 Industry

2. Making & Trading

3. Harbour Habitat

4. Recreation & Regeneration

Across these zones, there is a clear scale transition (schaalsprong)—from right to left.
Small, local initiatives and makers start in the more human-scale environments on the right. Moving left, spaces gradually increase in scale and intensity, allowing businesses to grow into larger, more industrial operations.

The goal is to create a system of interconnected micro-economies that reinforce each other. An environment where entrepreneurs of all kinds can grow from startup to multinational within one continuous urban framework.

It was super interesting and challenging to look at this industrial scale! What do you think? Can industry and livability exist next to each other?

Sfeerimpressie/collage van ons idee om de industrie in Zaandam weer onderdeel te laten worden van de stad op een hedendaagse manier.

Industriële gebieden zijn overal en zorgen er wereldwijd stilletjes voor dat steden blijven functioneren. Hier worden producten gemaakt, werken mensen en wordt economische waarde gecreëerd. Zonder industrie geen stad zoals wij die kennen. Toch worden deze plekken vaak gezien als vervuild, rommelig en losstaand van de stad, meestal weggestopt aan de randen. In Europa zijn veel van deze gebieden omgevormd tot woonwijken of hippe hotspots, waardoor productieve landschappen plaatsmaakten voor post-industriële woonwijken.
Maar dat verandert: de vraag naar industriële ruimte groeit gestaag door. Door logistiek, circulaire economie, energietransitie en nieuwe productie vormen ze weer of nog steeds een belangrijk onderdeel van de stad. De vraag is dus niet óf industrie in de stad thuishoort, maar hóé.

Na 3 dagen knippen, plakken, zagen, boren etc. is dit het eindresultaat van de introductie workshop.
Met 12 super leuke en lieve mensen aan 1 maquette werken op schaal 1:50 is best ingewikkeld, laat staan als je enorm uiteenlopende ideeën hebt. Maar we hebben er wat moois van gemaakt geloof ik!

Deze week staat het nadenken over de herinrichting van Vlooienburg in Amsterdam centraal. Vlooienburg is een kunstmatig aangelegd eiland dat tot de Tweede Wereldoorlog het hart vormde van de Amsterdamse Jodenbuurt. Na de oorlog keerde slechts 20% van de bewoners terug en raakte het gebied in verval. Tegenwoordig domineren het operagebouw en het stadhuis het eiland, maar door leegstand en thuiswerken ontbreekt levendigheid en is ook het Waterlooplein geen prettige verblijfplaats meer.
Mijn 1e schetsidee brengt het karakter van het eiland terug en maakt het gebied weer van de Amsterdammers, met oog voor klimaatverandering. Het bestaande geraamte blijft behouden en volgt het grid van de oorspronkelijke bebouwing. Betaalbare, collectieve woonvormen krijgen prioriteit, met groene daken en moestuinen in beheer van de bewoners. In de plint ontstaat ruimte voor winkels en lokale markten rond een nieuw gegraven gracht. Groen voor vogels en insecten vermindert hittestress en zorgt voor een prettige leefomgeving voor mens en dier.
