🔥 Support Beyond Bricks & Bars this GiveOUT Day!

This Thursday 15 October, every donation up to $1,750 will be matched and doubled. Your $20 becomes $40! 🔥

For 8 years, BBB has fought alongside incarcerated and formerly incarcerated trans and gender diverse (TGD) people for safety, healthcare, dignity and freedom from violence.

In the past 12 months, we've supported 79 TGD people - 50 women, 25 nonbinary people and 4 men. 30% are Aboriginal TGD people, reflecting the ongoing intersection of racism, transphobia and criminalisation.

Currently, 39 people are inside prisons across Victoria and NSW, receiving ongoing support, counselling, advocacy and connection to community.

Right now in Victoria, 99% of trans women in custody are placed in men's prisons, facing daily risks of sexual, physical and psychological violence and harm. In the past 18 months, no trans women have been permitted to enter the women's prison system.

We will continue to fight until all our community are free from harm.

BBB's support doesn't end at the prison gates. We currently support 40 people in the community, including 29 people supported to leave prison and stay out, and 11 supported to remain in the community, preventing incarceration.

✨ Your GiveOUT Day donation will help fund:

💘 Peer Support Group: A fortnightly, peer-led space for formerly incarcerated TGD people to build connection, share knowledge and reduce isolation.

💘 Prison Counselling: Free, confidential, gender-affirming counselling. Since August 2025, over 40 TGD people have accessed this vital support.

💘 Emergency Brokerage: Crisis accommodation, gender-affirming clothing, food, medication, safe transport, phone credit and resources for people inside and outside prison..

Every donation enables BBB to continue and build our life-saving project.

This week, we launched Dignity Behind Bars with @flatout.inc, highlighting a critical gap in Victoria: there is no standalone, dedicated legal service for people in prison.

Women, trans and gender diverse people in prison are experiencing discrimination, violence and the rampant use of solitary confinement - all while being denied access to the legal help they need.

That’s why we’re calling for a dedicated legal service for women, trans and gender diverse people in Victorian prisons, to help people enforce their rights and access justice.

Care is the antidote. It’s time for the Carroll Government to act.

Every person should be able to challenge mistreatment when their rights are violated.

Our new joint report Dignity Behind Bars with @flatout.inc exposes how women, trans and gender diverse people in prison are exposed to discrimination, violence and the systemic use of solitary confinement - all while being denied access to the legal help they need.

That’s why we’re calling for a dedicated legal service for women, trans and gender diverse people in Victoria’s prisons. This would give people access to justice and challenge abuses behind prison walls, starting with critical issues like solitary confinement and parole.

We feel better now that we have seen ourselves speaking on the telly last night.

It was a good day yesterday at the NO AIR IN PRISON rally because there were a lot of people there showing up against this human rights abuse.

We are behind the @firstpeoplesvic submission to the @victorian_government that calls for the bill to be withdrawn immediately.

Support this human rights movement to show your opposition to this move by @victorianlabor which would grant ongoing suspension to rights enshrined in the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and flout international minimum standards set for prisoners, rules named after Nelson Mandela.

The VIC Labor Party argues that this change is necessary to prevent lawsuits when open-air access is denied. Voices for Change says that access to sunlight and fresh air, which gives hope for the future, should not be dependent on an operational decision.

This is yet another move by a heavy-handed, law-and-order government that will disproportionately impact First Nations people, people with Acquired Brain Injury, and others needing holistic care and hope for the future, not practises of torture.

We have only just learned of the tragic death of young adult,
Tarsha Golightly, who advocates claim could have been adversely impacted by rolling lockdowns at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre. RIP Tarsha 🖤

Footscray belongs to everyone. That’s always been our position.

Recent discourse is putting homeless folks at material, imminent, serious risk - of violence from vigilantes and the state.

We’re looking at you:
@katie_in_footscray
@mohamedsemra Mayor of Maribyrnong
@councillor_pradeep_tiwari Maribyrnong councillor
crsamanthameredith Deputy Mayor of Maribyrnong

This must stop.

We know the answers that will create a safe and inclusive community for everyone. That answer does NOT include more police, more state violence, more prisons, more media demonisation, more blame and stigma and dehumanisation.

We’ll be posting more on this shortly.

The Victorian Government is trying to pass legislation that will deny people who are incarcerated a daily hour of time outside their cells where they can see the sky and experience sunshine, in direct breach of the Human Rights Act, and of the Mandela Rules. The Mandela Rules are internationally agreed baseline standards introduced to ensure that all prisoners are treated with basic respect and dignity.

Jesuit Social Services has collaborated with other organisations that work with people who have contact with the justice system to record the stories of women with lived experience of the justice system on why this matters.

Here is Kelly's story. by @flatout.inc
