Join us at Nightjar Arts Collective this weekend for some afternoon zine workshops as part of Records of Rebellion: A History of Political Zines!

Come to either one (or both if you want) to play around with zine materials and how you can express your (yes, YOUR!) perspective in print.

Prompts, guidance, and basic supplies will be included, but you are welcome to bring any supplies or specific images you would like to include in your zine. We hope to see you there! by @flatpackpubs

As FP enters whatever new phase it's in, I'll be catching up on a backlog of documentation posts and sharing some of the projects that have simmered out over the last year or so. This first one is a bit of a two-parter:

Last May, I was able to spend a crunchy whirlwind week at the University of Texas School for Design and Creative Technologies' Letterpress Lab, working with @henry.smith.henry.smith (special thanks) to design and mill a (mostly complete) body of woodtype for storage in the labs own archive. The resulting typeface is Pareidolia Sans—letterforms hallucinated from my own camera roll archive, mostly taken from 2019-2021. A body of type like eye floaters, vascillating between extreme heat and cold.

During the day, we milled and cut type, and in the evenings I pulled from an early selection of completed type and composed a packet of anagram poems. Flour Deck is the result, printed split fountain on the Vandercook, and finished on my own RISO at home.

this past year ive been reflecting a lot on Flatpack Publications, a publishing outfit originally named for the clean shippable modularity of furniture, of a machine for living, something slick and aspirational, designed as open-source, a clean-edged studio practice i can fit in my corolla. something where everything has been accounted for and every edge is known. in the 7+ years since i started writing out the press' infrastructure at a starbucks in seguin TX, the metaphor feels like its been refracted into something more vibrant: flat-pack not in the furniture sense but in the compost or earwax or sediment sense; a practice which isn't executed but accumulated.

i started estrogen in october and its the best thing i have ever done for myself in my entire life. it feels like pouring tap beer down the side of a glass and watching the head foam up, like dripping sand slurry from your hand on the beach into little spires. i can feel it sticking to my body, like my future isn't executed but accumulated. i hate every bloated mushroom head bastard killing us and everything that we love, and i wont ever forgive the people who stand by while it happens, and they will die stupid and bastard and useless, and more than that i love lebanese makaroons and sending lewds to my love and riding my bike while listening to music at night and the feeling when someone whose work i like likes my work. i don't want the corolla anymore, i want a studio that goes from edge to edge, and love when the evening sunlight hits the page of my book while i read in the corner booth of a restaurant by @flatpackpubs

Hey y'all, Paprika and I are back in Columbia for at least the year, adjuncting at Stephens and scraping together whatever else I can. Expect developments @flatpackpubs, some projects in the pipeline, but I am also manifesting more time for writing and reading and reexamination of what I want out of a publishing practice which has been going for almost 7 years now.

If you are in town, I would love to see you 🌿 I am also looking for additional part-time work, so if you've got connects I'd love to chat (would also love to organize a workshop, artist talk, night of readings, whatever while I'm here). taken in Columbia, Missouri by @flatpackpubs

Submissions for GARLAND Issue 4 due July 15th 🎱

hey folks, 1 more week to send in written or visual work for the next issue of @fifthwheelpress 's GARLAND, edited by me :)

This issue, "the body and body and body", I am looking for work which might approach the body from the *outside* (the subjectivities which make the quilted collective, are responsible for the production of meaningful life, which chafe against structures of power and push the limits of what is possible) or the *inside* (cities-unto-themselves, organs and waste and cells and failures and wetness and strangeness, infinitely-dense and unpredictable and errant and beautiful).

I'm looking for text, image, or both. Poetry, prose, expulsions or rants or manifestos or notes or strategies or conversations; photos, collages, screenshots, drawings, relics, records, scans.

Here's some documentation for "A Coverless Swan", the solo exhibition I just put together a few weeks ago for the @thehallgallery here at Millsaps College; a projection, book-sized poem, and objects all in decaying orbit around itchy futures emerging from the edges of my body, studio, and field of vision. This work was supported by a grant from the @msartscommission

This project is supported in part by funding from the Mississippi Arts Commission, a state agency, and in part, from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency

made another small foldable poetry publication before the break for a print exchange, but it got lost in the mail. I have to finish cutting the rest of the edition (approx. 20). $12 if you would like one

"trans floating hot dog finger" is a poem about getting orange peel juice in your eye and the tender modest force needed to sever the body, cast it out into the infant sun, rotate it in your mind, or drive and keep driving.

the first week of classes is finished, and the first exercise with my students for Publishing and the Living Book is to help make the sapling syllabus. we made 2-color RISO plates to learn the basics of print anatomy and construction + get familiar with the copier—an invaluable layouting and generative imagemaking tool which seems less and less accessible these days. every student at all levels shld have ready access to a shitty copier, shld be able to make a composition with meat and light and paper. as the course continues these little folders will get more and more swollen with whatever weird ephemera i have the time and energy to stuff them with.

special s/o to the handouts I integrated from @huldrapress 's "Thinking in the Language of Books" class (originally pulled from one of Franz Zeier's books) at penland in 2023 i had the good fortune of assisting for by @flatpackpubs

this little book was made a year and a half ago about the 2018 camp fires, but it was also made now, and every year, or 8 months, or 6, or 2 months from now, or for the last 14 months.

tbh those extra $138 million of LA cops shld be stacked like sweating sandbags around unhoused camps and welfare centers and abortion clinics against the oncoming fires, fusing with their riot gear into a polymer monument that runs through the city, rail lines laid on their charred backs and community gardens choking out the rotten precincts by @flatpackpubs

this is a poem and 4-color riso print (sunflower, raspberry, sky, and black) of the drooling, hungry nocturnal life behind my old apartment. dm for a copy if you like, 10$.

sifting through the sediment of writing that has settled in notes apps, trying to find out what kinds of scales i want to engage with as a publisher and writer, how I want it to grow post-MFA, what I've got energy for, what is worth doing. a few more things in the works (and some more documentation I'm behind on), but right now I've been excited about gestural forms and foldables. I've been putting out my own work predominantly due to the speed and ease it can be put together, but looking forward to more collaborations (my dms are also open) by @flatpackpubs
