Um dos momentos mais emocionantes desse ano 2024, tive a honra de trabalhar novamente pro encontro indígena 🏹na Califórnia @aniwa.co e pra maravilhosa neta do pioneiro 🎥 Charles Chaplin @oonacc.
E essa é minha homenagem pros nossos indígenas 🇧🇷verdadeiros brasileiros, que estavam lá representando. 🙌🙏🏹🇧🇷😱

Momentos do dia: o encontro com o majestoso urubu-rei, a elegância da garça-real, as onças-pintadas e a Amber caçando, saltando na água em busca de sua presa, enquanto seus filhotes crescem cercado pelos desafios e aprendizados da vida selvagem. Gosto de observar tudo em câmera lenta, revendo cada movimento, cada detalhe e cada comportamento que acontece tão rápido diante dos nossos olhos. O Pantanal é assim, uma sucessão de encontros, cenas e histórias que nunca deixam de surpreender.

Moments of the day: an encounter with the majestic king vulture, the elegance of the cocoi heron, and the jaguars, including Amber hunting and leaping into the water in pursuit of her prey, while her cub grows surrounded by the challenges and lessons of life in the wild. I love watching everything in slow motion, revisiting every movement, every detail, and every behavior that unfolds so quickly before our eyes. The Pantanal is a continuous succession of encounters, scenes, and stories that never cease to amaze.

Momento do dia:

Uma garça-moura pescando no Pantanal.

Depois de capturar o peixe, ela precisa matá-lo antes de engoli-lo. E a forma como faz isso é uma das cenas mais brutais de assistir: ela enfia o bico repetidamente no corpo do peixe, como um arpão, até que ele finalmente pare de se mexer.

Em vários momentos deste vídeo, o peixe ainda está vivo, enquanto ela continua golpeando com o bico. Só quando ele finalmente para de se mexer é que ela consegue engoli-lo.

A Cocoi Heron fishing in the Pantanal.

After catching the fish, she needs to kill it before swallowing it. The way she does this is one of the most brutal scenes to watch: repeatedly driving her bill into the fish’s body like a harpoon until it finally stops moving.

In several moments of this video, the fish is still alive while she continues striking with her bill. Only when it finally stops moving can she swallow it.

Momento do dia

Uma cena muito forte e chocante: Kim, uma onça-pintada macho, carregando um jacaré enorme pela mandíbula.

A onça-pintada é um predador de topo e possui uma mordida excepcionalmente poderosa. Ela consegue perfurar o crânio de suas presas, algo que a diferencia de outros grandes felinos. Jacarés também fazem parte da alimentação das onças-pintadas no Pantanal, e elas podem capturar indivíduos de diferentes tamanhos.

Nesta cena, não houve uma grande luta. Kim dominou o jacaré e o carregou pela mandíbula, mostrando toda a força de um dos maiores predadores das Américas.

A natureza, quando observada de perto, também é feita de cenas fortes como essa.

Moment of the day

A very intense and shocking scene: Kim, a male jaguar, carrying an enormous caiman by its jaw.

The jaguar is an apex predator with an exceptionally powerful bite. It can pierce the skulls of its prey, a characteristic that sets it apart from other big cats. Caimans are also part of the jaguar’s diet in the Pantanal, and jaguars can prey on individuals of different sizes.

There was no major struggle in this scene. Kim overpowered the caiman and carried it by the jaw, showing the incredible strength of one of the Americas’ most powerful predators.

Nature, when observed up close, also means witnessing powerful scenes like this.

Foto do dia:

Hoje, em vez de uma foto, um momento em câmera lenta desse encontro especial. Eu olhando para ele, ele olhando para mim, e por alguns segundos parecia que a gente estava realmente se reconhecendo.

No final do vídeo, algumas fotos desse araçari-castanho tão perfeito e colorido.

O araçari faz parte da mesma família dos tucanos, os Ramphastidae. Apesar de ser menor, compartilha com eles características como o bico grande e colorido. Também é uma ave bastante social, frequentemente vista em pequenos grupos pela floresta.

Today, instead of a photo, a slow motion moment from this special encounter. Me looking at him, him looking back at me, and for a few seconds it felt like we were truly seeing each other.

At the end of the video, a few photos of this beautiful and colorful chestnut-eared aracari.

The aracari belongs to the same family as toucans, the Ramphastidae. Although smaller, it shares characteristics such as its large, colorful bill. It is also a very social bird, often seen in small groups throughout the forest.

Foto do dia

Hoje eu achei que não teria nenhuma foto especial para o meu diário visual. Era meu dia de folga, eu estava no hotel, em meio à cidade de Cuiabá.

Até que escutei o chamado de uma arara-canindé. Abri a janela e lá estava um casal de canindés, bem ali, no meio da cidade.

Eu sei que a qualidade da foto não está das melhores. Já era fim de tarde, quase anoitecendo, então o ISO estava bem alto. Mesmo assim, quis postar, porque esse diário é justamente sobre registrar os momentos que fazem parte dos meus dias, mesmo quando a fotografia não está tecnicamente perfeita.

E, definitivamente, esse foi um encontro que eu não esperava, mas sentia, que iria ter no meu dia de folga.

Photo of the day

Today I thought I wouldn’t have any special photo for my visual diary. It was my day off, and I was staying at a hotel in the middle of Cuiabá.

Then I heard the call of a blue-and-yellow macaw. I opened the window and there they were, a pair of macaws, right there in the middle of the city.

I know the quality of the photo isn’t the best. It was already late afternoon, almost dusk, so the ISO was very high. But I still wanted to share it, because this diary is about documenting the moments that make up my days, even when the photograph isn’t technically perfect.

And this was definitely an encounter I never expected to have on my day off, but I felt it.

Glowing eyes in the dark. Not a lot of people would be able to guess this rare canid. And fewer still could get such incredible footage… this vid from @flaviatasso is mesmerizing. Take a guess what this is, I’ll put it in the comments.

From @flaviatasso — I stepped out of my room here in the Pantanal just to catch a bit of Wi-Fi… and ended up experiencing one of those encounters you can’t plan. 🐺✨ This maned wolf—a female I’d seen a little earlier—came back and approached me. She caught my scent and slowly drew nearer, while I remained crouched on the ground, watching in silence. For a few moments, we were very close, sharing that space without any rush. When I stood up, she moved away—a reminder that, in nature, distance is also part of the encounter. That’s what I love so much about the Pantanal: you never know what might happen when you simply step out the door. by @flaviatasso
