Anas al-Sharif was born in the Jabalia refugee camp in the Gaza Strip in 1996. Growing up under Israeli occupation, he decided early on to become a journalist to document life in the enclave. At the beginning of the genocide, in 2023, he was hired by Al Jazeera and became one of Gaza’s most prominent and beloved voices.

His father was killed in an Israeli attack on the family home in November 2023 after Anas received several threats via WhatsApp. He himself was murdered on the night of August 10, 2025, in a targeted Israeli drone strike on his journalists’ tent. His colleagues Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed al-Khalidi, along with two others, died in the same attack. In the past three years, Israel has murdered more journalists and media workers (260+) in Gaza than any other entity in any other conflict over any given period.

Anas al-Sharif was 28 years old when he died, and is survived by his wife and two children. The following is what he wrote in his will about his children, which inspired this drawing:

“I entrust to you my beloved daughter Sham, my sunshine, whom I sadly did not get to see grow up as I had dreamed.”

“I entrust to you my dear son Salah, whom I would have gladly supported and guided until he was strong enough to bear my burden and continue the mission.”
