Extremely happy to announce our latest project "Candomble : Sacred Rhythms in Brazil"!

After the traumatic Atlantic crossing, enslaved West African populations in Brazil sought to rebuild their sacred cultural and spiritual systems within a profoundly hostile environment.Five centuries later, the vitality of the terreiros bears witness to a living, adaptive tradition which is Candomblé, still deeply rooted in ancestral knowledge and now recognised far beyond Afro-descendant communities in Brazil.

The 2xLP of this project brings together a rich and expansive selection of recordings, including archival material captured between 1985 and 1988 at Ilê Axé Opô Aganjú, a Candomblé terreiro in Lauro de Freitas, alongside newly commissioned works by people we love and admire like @djandersondoparaiso @procura_______se @xexarecords @lasvegasbibeli @djsandriinho @gabiguedesmusic @savioq @thereal_tiger_tigre @kimia_afroelectro

The bilingual book that comes with it, brings together a curated selection of archival documentation alongside newly commissioned texts and artistic contributions by the likes of @cicideoxala @thiagomartinsdemelo @joserbaptista @sonxseed @raio_studio
Through historical research, essays, and visual materials, it honours this tradition by tracing its foundations while reflecting on its contemporary transformations and future trajectories.

At the Pierre Verger Foundation in Salvador, Bahia, the extraordinary legacy of photographer and ethnographer Pierre Verger continues to inspire new generations. Through more than 50,000 photographs, Verger documented the everyday lives, traditions, and spiritual connections between Brazil and West Africa with remarkable empathy and respect, creating one of the most significant visual records of Afro-Atlantic cultures.

This legacy is sustained not only through the preservation of the archive, but through people like ethnomusicologist Angela Lühning. For decades, her work has extended beyond research into grassroots cultural engagement, collaborating closely with local communities, artists, educators, and tradition bearers. By connecting academic knowledge with community practice, she has helped ensure that the Foundation is not only a place of memory, but also a living space for cultural exchange, education, and social inclusion.

We were fortunate to collaborate with the Foundation, presenting a selection of Pierre Verger’s photographs alongside material from Angela Lühning’s previously undisclosed and undigitized personal archive. These remarkable recordings, made in the 1980s at the Ile Axe Opo Aganju terreiro, appear on the second LP of the compilation Candomblé: Sacred Rhythms in Brazil, accompanied by a text in the accompanying book in which Lühning explores the musicality of the rituals and their cultural significance.

Since nothing beats the real thing, we finally found the time to shoot some proper photographs of both the book and the record for our latest project, “Candomblé: Sacred Rhythms in Brazil.”

It took us some time, as the response to the project has been overwhelming, and we wanted to express our deepest thanks for it. We are incredibly grateful to all the artists, witnesses, and practitioners of Candomblé who trusted us with their stories and this work.

A few copies are still available on our website and Bandcamp via the link in bio.

We are also currently dispatching some copies to Brazil and will soon be announcing a few events and partners there, making it easier to find the project locally 🇧🇷

“Candomblé : Sacred Rhythms in Brazil” published by our friends of @fleeproject is finally out. The project seeks to honour this tradition by documenting its historical foundations while offering a critical and artistic reflection on its contemporary transformations and future trajectories.

Together with @raio_studio Sometimes Always was in charge of designing the bilingual book that brings together a curated selection of archival documentation alongside newly commissioned texts and artistic contributions by the likes of @cicideoxala @thiagomartinsdemelo @joserbaptista @sonxseed A relevant part of the project floats around the photographical and ethnological work of Pierre Verger.

Through historical research, essays, and visual materials, the project honours Candomblé’s tradition by tracing its foundations while reflecting on its contemporary transformations and future trajectories.

Over the moon to announce that “Candomblé: Sacred Rhythms in Brazil” is officially out today and available everywhere!

After several years of collaborative work, we are delighted to present the full book and double-record compilation, featuring many brilliant musicians, researchers, artists, and, of course, practitioners and witnesses of Candomblé.�

With Candomblé being celebrated throughout Brazil and beyond, this project aims to present the richness and complexity of this ritual. It brings together various contributors reflecting in a critical manner on a range of topics, from the harsh nature of its transatlantic history all the way to its ever-evolving essence and relationship with Africa in today’s hyper-globalised world.

"À leur arrivée au Brésil, après l'épreuve de la traversée atlantique, les populations africaines réduites en esclavage entreprirent de reconstituer, dans un monde hostile, les fondements spirituels et culturels arrachés à leur terre d'origine. Cinq siècles plus tard, les terreiros — lieux de culte et de transmission - demeurent les témoins vivants d'une religion en mouvement, capable de se transformer sans jamais rompre avec la mémoire ancestrale qui la fonde.
Aujourd’hui, le Candomblé rayonne bien au-delà des communautés afrodescendantes et des frontières brésiliennes, suscitant un intérêt croissant à l'échelle internationale."

Le projet Candomblé prend la forme d'un livre bilingue (anglais-portugais) et d'un double vinyle réunissant des archives sonores rares et des créations inédites, rendant hommage à cette tradition tout en interrogeant ses métamorphoses présentes et ses devenirs possibles.

Il s'appuie notamment sur des enregistrements de terrain réalisés en 1985 et 1988 au sein de Pilê Axé Opô Aganjú, terreiro de Candomblé situé dans la région de Salvador, auxquels répondent des œuvres commandées à des artistes contemporains tels que DJ Anderson do Paraíso, XEXA et Felinto.

Le livre rassemble également des essais critiques, des commandes artistiques ainsi qu'un ensemble d'archives photographiques rares du photographe et ethnographe Pierre Verger.

@thiagomartinsdemelo is a Brazilian visual artist, born in 1981 in São Luís, Maranhão, who lives and works between São Luís and São Paulo. His practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, and animation, with painting serving as both a material and conceptual point of departure.

His work is characterized by visually dense, large-scale compositions that combine expressionist and realist techniques to evoke battles, syncretic rituals, and moments of epiphany. Drawing on references from art history, mass culture, and the cultural industry, his practice constructs layered meta-narratives addressing anti-colonial struggles and historical memory.

Through a brutal and tactile pictorial language, his works merge volume, objects, and images, rendering mythological figures and historical scenes deliberately opaque. Drawing on Afro-Indigenous cosmologies from Maranhão, he builds a plural narrative world in dialogue with Candomblé.

Iuri Ricardo Passos de Barros @iuripassos10 is a Brazilian percussionist, ethnomusicologist, composer, arranger, producer, and educator based in Salvador.
He began his musical training in early childhood at Ilê Iyá Omin Axé Iyamassê, a terreiro, a sacred ritual space in Candomblé dedicated to the worship of Yoruba deities known as orixás, where he was initiated into the sacred rhythms and musical traditions of Candomblé.

In his interview with Savio de Queiroz, @savioq from @lugar_alto the artist and researcher reflects on his life at Terreiro do Gantois and his commitment to the transmission, preservation, and respectful practice of Candomblé’s sacred rhythms.

His research focuses on the transmission of candomblé toques within the terreiro tradition. He teaches percussion at Federal University of Bahia, @ufba.oficial founded the Rum Alagbê social project at Terreiro do Gantois @terreirodogantois and is a leading voice in Afro-Brazilian rhythm education. As a producer and arranger, he notably contributed to the album Obatalá : uma homenagem à Mãe Carmen, which was nominated for a Latin Grammy Awards.

He welcomed us into his world and offered valuable insight into the role of drumming within Candomblé and the social and spiritual structure of the terreiro.

Jonathan @radbwa_faroush Mayers is an artist, poet, and cultural activist from Istrouma (Baton Rouge), dedicated to the defense of Kouri-Vini, the endangered Louisiana Creole language.

Founder of Latannyèrizm, a style blending Creole mythologies with contemporary imaginaries, he grounds his work in a practice of cultural reclamation and living memory.

Through paintings inhabited by legendary creatures and accompanied by poems in Creole, he celebrates an identity rooted in the swamps, oral storytelling, and the struggles of the South.

We quickly realized his work would be the perfect poetic extension of our research exploring themes of cultural preservation and artistic creation, and we are extremely grateful to be able to feature his works.

Drake LeBlanc @lovebenoir is a musician, photographer, filmmaker, and perhaps above all, a cultural activist from Lafayette, Louisiana.

He co-founded @telelouisiane, a multilingual media platform that produces content in Louisiana French, English, and Creole to support local languages, arts, and communities.

He also recently directed his first feature film, Footwork, an abstract portrait of Black and Creole cowboys in Louisiana and their connection to horses.

With a distinctly contemporary approach, he shares his perspective on the importance of making culture desirable in order to help it endure. In this extended piece, @_gwennie gathers his reflections and interviews him, placing his thoughts in dialogue with her own research.
