This is Col. Paul Tibbets, who piloted the mission to drop the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on this day in 1945. Through a relative who had been a college friend of his, I was able to interview him for a high school history class project. It was a thrilling telephone call – at the time he was running Executive Jet Aviation out of Columbus, Ohio, which later became NetJets – and he spoke at length about the planning of the mission and the flight itself. He said he had no regrets because he knew his mission helped end the war, and because he was following orders, which was something that “back then, you didn’t question.” He had named the plane that flew the mission after his mother, Enola Gay. by @fletcherpix
