So it’s spooky season which I’m not a fan of but I’m trying to get into the spirit this year by picking some spooky and cosy reads (I even lit a pumpkin candle, what’s wrong w me🤪). I’ve started off with an arc of ‘Darker Days’ which I’m really enjoying so far - I’m about halfway through and will be sharing a review when finished. But these are my October picks !! I don’t usually pick out a tbr (and watch me not stick to these whoops) but it’s nice to have a ‘themed’ month of reads, and it’s made me pick some that have been on my shelf for an embarrassingly long time.

Have you read any of these? If not, what spooky or cosy read (and/or film!) would you recommend?

The House of My Mother - Shari Franke
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“This nightmare was born on social media - it should die there, too.”

Having watched a few documentaries on the Franke family, I was itching to read this memoir - it was so insightful and raw, and I appreciated Shari speaking on her experiences and what she suffered. Shari’s journal entries allowed the reader to see the contrast between her feelings at the time, and also how she viewed those events with the benefit of hindsight. It was a very sad read, but ultimately a very important one. If you’re looking for a memoir or a non-fiction, I would definitely recommend this one - although the topics are of course very hard-hitting. by @fleurseysbooks

🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹

I keep forgetting to share this but when we went to Verona (did i mention i went to Verona??? don’t go on about it enough🤪) we visited the world’s oldest library (or, at least one of) - ‘la Capitolare’ and it was gorge !!!!!! It’s been functioning for over 1500 years since around the 5th or 6th century - it was just such a great place of history to visit, with so many well-preserved texts and manuscripts. Literally had no idea it existed until i saw it on instagram when searching for places we should sightsee while there. My lil bookish heart was filled after visiting !! Highly recommend if you’re ever in Verona.

What’s the coolest library/bookshop you’ve visited while abroad?

Yesteryear - Caro Claire Burke
(no rating)

Girlies, I just can’t rate this one nor give you a coherent review😂It was mad and I couldn’t put it down - I loved it but hated it at the same time. I had a million theories for the ending, and they were all wrong. If this one intrigues you, do read it! But it’s the weirdest book ever and idk how I feel about it. That is all🤪 by @fleurseysbooks

The Correspondent - Virginia Evans
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a gorgeous lil read, I can see why this one has been receiving rave reviews. A poignant novel exploring grief, friendships, regrets - it makes you reflect that moments in life can be fleeting. I’m really glad I decided to pick this one up, a short read but packed a punch. Would recommend to everyone💓 by @fleurseysbooks

🚜🚜🚜

Synopsis ;

Natalie lives a traditional lifestyle – and her followers are sick with envy. Her charming farmhouse on her working ranch is artfully cluttered, her husband is a handsome cowboy, her homemade sourdough boules are each more beautiful than the last. So what if there are nannies and producers and industrial-grade ovens behind the scenes? What her followers don’t know won’t hurt them.
Then, one morning, Natalie wakes up in a strange, horrible version of reality. Her home, her husband, her children―they’re all familiar, but something’s off. Is this a hoax? A reality show? A test from God? Natalie knows just two things for sure: this isn’t her perfect life, and she must escape, by any means possible.

The whole world and his wife have read this one, and I do get the little ol’ fomo so I picked this one up in the airport (nowt beats a large paperback😍). My #currentread and it’s UNSETTLING. Hoping to have it finished by tomorrow as I’m about halfway through (and I’m ready for that big twist, whatever it may be…)

Have you read this one? Have you been on holiday this year or planning to go away?

Last week we visited @thepopupclub_ and they had the cutest bookish treats in there !! I bought soooo much no regrets, bought myself a bunch of cute earrings too. It’s one of my fave lil shops and I love browsing in there, so I was v v excited to see this display (me and mum had to hold each other back from just buying everything🤑) And I always always love a blind date with a book !! The best idea ever invented. Support your local businesses always💓

What’s your fave small business, bookish or otherwise?

👸🏼👸🏼👸🏼

Synopsis ;

Prince Domhnall and Princess Clía are the perfect royal match – that is until he ruins everything by refusing to propose. Heartbroken but determined, Clía wins a place at Domhnall’s military academy to win him back. After all, how hard can duelling really be?
Warrior Ronan has no time for blonde princesses. Even if she is…well, cute. He tells himself there’s no harm training her. Even if his heart does race around her. Even if Domhnall is his best friend.
But, as they say, love is a battlefield – and unfortunately for them, a very real war is looming on the horizon. It’s a fight that will threaten their kingdoms…and their hearts.

I was drawn to the cover on this one, and when I read the blurb I had to buy !! Dubbed as a retelling of Legally Blonde with princesses and knights, I was doubly sold (top tier chick flick in book form let’s go). Very excited to pick this one up, if it’s a romantasy read then I’m all for it. Fingers crossed my excitement for this one will pay off !!

What was your last anticipated read and was it as good as you’d hoped?

Fearless - Lauren Roberts
⭐️⭐️⭐️

I figured I would review this one seeing as I’d reviewed the other two - I’d forgotten much of the previous book (whoops) but it was pretty easy to pick up the story once it got going. But all in all, I felt like this was a disappointing end to the trilogy.

The first half was pretty meh, the second half was much better once the trials started - however these were pretty much over as soon as they began. I suppose the twists were good, but it felt like a lot was thrown in right at the end with little room for the plot lines to actually be fleshed out. And the ending annoyed the hell out of me, such a cop out😂

Powerless and Reckless were good fun, but the magic of those two reads got lost in this one. I feel like there is such a high bar for fantasy reads nowadays, and sadly the final read in this trilogy just missed the mark for me. by @fleurseysbooks

What feels like a never-ending heatwave calls for a summer-inspired flatlay - of these, I’ve only read ‘Malibu Rising’ and ‘The Summer Job’ (both 5 stars🤩), and the rest are on my tbr. Seeing as I’m a seasonal reader, I should probably get to some of these before we inevitably get all the rain - maybe some holiday reads here !! ‘My Friends’ by Backman is definitely very highly anticipated for me and I’ve seen a ton of positive reviews for it on bookstagram so I’ll probably bump this one up the tbr.

Have you read any of these? Any summery books on your tbr?

London Falling - Patrick Radden Keefe
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you’re not a non-fiction reader, this one will convince you to start !! A couple of years ago I read ‘Empire of Pain’ by this author and was captivated by his writing - that, coupled with the consistent 5 star reviews I’d been seeing for this read made me buy a copy, and I’m so glad I did. This was such an engaging and emotional read, and I had to keep reminding myself that this is a true story. Ending with a haunting final paragraph, this one will stick with me for a very long time, and I’ll be imploring keen and not-so-keen non-fiction readers to pick this one up. by @fleurseysbooks
