A few weeks ago GEORGE made a little jaunt over the Atlantic to play at Cologne Jazzweek and the Bimhuis. In Cologne, we heard some great music by: @rogerkintopf CIPHER: @therealkirkakarje @felix_hauptmann @philipdornbusch and our own @ChiquitaMagic who played a powerful DJ set We were to privileged to open for and hang out with @samamidon and Sam Gendel as an extra bonus we met the amazing composer/dude, @ _ethanbraun_ As you can see Sarah and Anna had too much fun at soundcheck making creepy shadow creatures. The next day we played for the Amsterdamers (including @ekimeroom2024 (Michael Moore), @jodigilbert799 and @ab_baars) at the renown bimhuis. If you have not been there, check it out! The venue is stunning and the crew is top-notch. We are grateful for the support of @lecalq , which made this trip possible. In 2018, John Hollenbeck @flexatone and Matt Horanzy @matt.horanzy exchanged a series of emails as part of a research project focused on John's arranging process for the albums “Songs I Like a Lot” and “Songs We Like a Lot.” After the 2020 release of the third album in the series “Songs You Like a Lot,” John added some additional thoughts and published the conversation on the ISJAC Blog. {direct link in comments} "What I can say generally is that I look at the original melodies, sometimes the harmonies but usually just the melodies (maybe the bass lines occasionally) and then generate new material from them. I don’t usually bring new material into the arrangement. To give you some more specifics, I will usually take the melody, retrograde it and then turn this line into something vertical (chords/harmony). Or I might take the interval set from a melody and process that into more sets and then use that. (ala Bob Brookmeyer)... ... I would like to note that with most arrangements, I’m trying to keep the essence of the songs intact while giving them new life, like a new coat of paint or a renovation. 🎶 ALBUM OF THE WEEK – THE CHOSEN ONE 🎶 John Hollenbeck & Hot Club Jazz Orchestra – Peace and Justice (Flexatonic) John Hollenbeck reunites with the Hot Club Jazz Orchestra for Peace and Justice, a powerful large-ensemble recording shaped by resilience, international collaboration and an urgent call for hope in turbulent times. More than a decade after a memorable concert together in Lisbon, Hollenbeck and the orchestra began work on this project, recorded in June 2022 at Canoa Studios, just as international travel resumed following the pandemic. Its four-year journey was marked by extraordinary challenges: the orchestra’s historic club suffered a devastating fire and financial hardship, while a commissioned project in Kyiv was halted by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Yet from this disruption emerged a recording that affirms connection, solidarity and the transformative power of music. Originally commissioned in late 2021 by Ukrainian curator Olha Bekenshtein, the project was intended to feature Hollenbeck’s arrangements of Ukrainian music. Although the original commission could not take place, its spirit resonates throughout the album. Two Ukrainian works anchor the recording, including “Red Shades”, Hollenbeck’s arrangement of the historic anthem Oi u luzi chervona kalyna (Oh, the Red Viburnum in the Meadow), written in 1914 by Stepan Charnetskyi and revived in 2022 as a symbol of Ukrainian resistance. A second Ukrainian carol from the Kharkiv region, “In the Middle of the Yard,” builds hypnotically through repetition and evolution.
