About 9 years ago a young fella called @tlanecreates made a surfboard almost entirely from cigarette butts he found on the beach for the @visslasurf creators and innovators competition. The idea itself was brilliant but the execution and accompanying video was so good and really inspiring. As expected he won that years contest and has since gone on to produce a film called @thecigarettesurfboard with some of our favourite humans. It’s currently available to watch online. One of the biggest juggling acts we contend with when developing a new construction method is reproducing a shaper’s design accurately without losing the craft that makes a surfboard special.

With 3D scanning technology, shapers can now create incredibly accurate CAD files from their hand shapes.

When we build another shaper’s design in Flex Frame, we use machines, some of which we have had to make ourselves, to do the grunt work and make sure the rocker, contours, foil and overall design are reproduced accurately.

Then the highly skilled hands take over.

The final shaping involves blending the materials together and shaping the tuck using traditional shaping tools and techniques. This is where experience, feel and craftsmanship are extremely critical.

For us, this feels like the perfect balance. Digital accuracy where it makes sense, human skill where it matters.

We have no intention of automating more of the shaping process and will always hire experienced domestic shapers to complete these tasks. by @flexframe.tech

A few years ago, we developed a new construction that we believed could bring something genuinely new and exciting to the surfboard industry. So we set out to find shapers who might be interested in working with us and having their shapes produced in our unique technology. We made a few demos for Chris Christenson, and he agreed to license the Lanesplitter on a trial basis.

It quickly became a best seller, and after a year of positive feedback, we’re stoked to announce that we can now produce the full @christensonsurfboards catalogue. (Up to 9’4” due to machinery limitations)

We’re honoured to bring these epic shapes to life with our unique technology and give more surfers the opportunity to experience one of Chris’s tried and tested designs in Flexframe construction.

Fresh batch of @hughessurfboards in @flexframe.tech. Built in Wellington. Shaped in Raglan by @uncle.kook and coated locally by @harrisonyoungcraft. Upstairs now at @raglansurfco, Come down and cop a feel.

So Luke doesn’t have to spend all night replying to DM’s ….

2mm Cork top, 3mm paulownia bottom (grown 2 hours from Raglan), eps core, parabolic bendy ply rails, natural fibres (hemp and flax), bio resin, natural hardwax coatings (no glass)

Great to catch up with @torrenmartyn and @ishkaimagery as they passed through Wellington a few weeks ago to tour there new film, Southern Edge. Epic film! I reckon it’s there best work yet. Huge congrats to Torren, Ishka, @needessentials, @simonjonesdesigns and everyone else involved on another masterpiece.

Was cool to show Torren the latest tech as he rode the 2nd cork prototype about 3 years ago, it creased in 3 places but didn’t snap which we thought was cool. They have come a long way since then. Haven’t had any creases or snaps in about a year. Little clip of Torren riding a 5’11” @christensonsurfboards Lanesplitter in @flexframe.tech.

The board that kicked off our licensing program with @lovemachine_surfboards. A 5’3” Wills fish designed by @ryanlovelace and @william_aliotti. Shaped by @harrisonyoungcraft, Tested and approved by @brycebaker3 and filmed by @94.video last year.

(This was an earlier tech that still required wax)
