Etihad allows confirmed upgrades from business to first class with their “bid for upgrade” system. The trick to making sure you can get a confirmed upgrade is to book a flight that’s refundable. If you have Amex US you can book via Amex travel (they offer discounts on Etihad) and then cancel at no cost within 24h. You can do the same via OTA portals like Orbitz if you don’t have Amex. You can also check to see if award seats are available first before going through the process. My flight from Phuket to Copenhagen via Abu Dhabi cost around $1700 one way in business (lowest fare type). After I purchased the flight I went online went through the bid for an upgrade system. When you opt to bid with points the system will tell you how many miles you need for in instant confirmation. The total was 17,500 for each segment so 35k Etihad Guest miles (sorry I got that wrong in the video ha!). That’s a bargain FYI! You can transfer Etihad Guest miles from Amex so they are pretty easy to get. by @flighthacks
