Back in early April, we had the opportunity to sit down with our partners at Mendenhall Wine & Spirits and Liquor Barrel in Wiggins, Mississippi, and taste through an incredible lineup of Rare Character barrels.

After working our way through several outstanding options, two barrels separated themselves from the pack… two completely different pours, each special in its own way. We knew immediately these were coming home with us.

And with America celebrating its 250th anniversary, we wanted these releases to tell a story worthy of the occasion.

🇺🇸 DELAWARE PROOF

Christmas night, 1776.

With the Revolution hanging in the balance, George Washington led his troops across the ice-filled Delaware River in the darkness of night, marching on Trenton and delivering a victory that helped breathe new life into the American cause.

250 years later, we raise a glass to that moment.

DELAWARE PROOF is our tribute to the courage, determination and downright audacity that helped forge a nation.

🇺🇸 MISSISSIPPI

The second barrel needed no complicated story.

This thing is dark, rich and ridiculously viscous… one of those barrels that grabs your attention the second it hits the glass.

So we decided to represent the place and the people who helped bring this pick together.

MISSISSIPPI.

Wrapped in red, white and blue and selected alongside our Mississippi partners, it’s a beautiful barrel we’re incredibly proud to put the Flight Krewe name on.

Two Rare Character barrels. Two completely different personalities. One very special release celebrating 250 years of America.

🚁 Low Altitude – High Proof 🥃

This evening’s review features a Huling Station Single Barrel from Old Dominick Distillery. Distilled in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, this nine-year-old MGP bourbon has an unusually high-rye mash bill at 52% corn, 44% rye, and 4% malted barley. I bought this bottle knowing nothing about Huling Station other than it is an Old Dominick product.

Nose: Candy cherry takes the lead, followed by raspberry and an apple tart note. Cinnamon and nutmeg develop as it opens in the glass, with a touch of citrus. A little ethanol hangs around in the background. Nothing crazy.

Palate: A surprisingly rich and oily mouthfeel. The fruit from the nose carries over nicely, followed by toffee and brown sugar. Rye spice develops through the mid-palate with a hint of oak.

Finish: A brief warmth turns sweet before rolling into a peppery rye finish. The finish lasts and continues to produce notes long after the sip. I appreciate the moderate level of spice considering the high-rye mash bill.

Summary: This is a really good high-rye MGP bourbon. I bought this bottle on a whim knowing nothing about Huling Station. I think I picked it up as part of a bundle and just hoped it would be decent…..It’s pretty awesome. @flightkrewe killin it! Well done.

What an incredible community we have built over the past few years with @flightkrewe —both locally and across the country.

When someone needs a helping hand, this group proves time and time again that we are all in this together, and we will do whatever we can to show up and support.

Thanks to every single one of you who donated, bought a glass, or shared our mission, not only did we hit our goal, we officially raised $𝟐𝟐,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐆𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧!

On Monday evening, at the Rare Character Tales of the Cocktail dinner, we had the distinct honor of presenting our check to Team Gleason in memory of our beloved friend, Wendy Blouin.

We also want to give a massive shoutout to two other phenomenal organizations doing incredible work in this space: 𝐍𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐳𝐚. Having been personally to both of their events over the last year, we can tell you firsthand the impact they are making. As a part of NVN Chicago, Nashville Nights would like to announce a donation in the amount of $15000.00 to the Team Gleason ALS foundation.

This disease strikes home for me, as I lost my friend, Tandy Simpson Hubbard, to ALS 2 years ago. My buddy Billy and his two children lost her to this disease. Hopefully this donation will put us on a path to finding a cure.

I would like to thank the Nashville crew @nashville.bourbon @anthonyassi81 @whiskey_wiseman @drewdramdrunk for helping with all things NVN. Would like to thank Flight Krewe, JBs Whiskey House, Rare Character, @lquintinwise and Mike with BBN and others for the shared donation! All event attendees especially NVN Chicago for making this happen. Most of all would like to thank Rox and Pablo for their support. Without them this would not be possible.
